Not the PDA, but my sister's radio was stolen when the removeable part of the radio was put in the glove box. The police told her that she would have been watched parking and putting the removeable front into the glove box and hence targeted.
So if you do put parts in the glove box, make sure you are not seen doing it. |

One advantage of using sat nav on your phone, it's very easy to just put into your pocket and take it with out :D |

After getting my stereo nicked and glove box broken into to steal the face off I now leave nothing whatsover in my car. My PDA, gps and mount come with me whenever I leave the car, what I could do with is some sort of portable storage device so I don't have to carry everything including stereo face off, gps, holder and pda !
If possible leave nothing in your glove box and don't lock it as lowlife thieves will think your hiding something in their and just break it open causing more damage. I know some people who leave all their doors open too, again to avoid damage breaking in! |

Unfortunately if your car is stolen the insurance would be void as the company insist you take every care to protect your car.
Isn't it amazing how we have to go to such lengths to protect ourselves from these lowlife scumbags who can't be bothered to get a job and earn an honest living. I'm cursing them everytime I have to go through the routine of locking up the house and putting the burglar alarm on. I should be able to walk out and just shut my door. |

While I would agree to leaving the glove box unlocked (some may say keep it empty and OPEN - (and enjoy a flat battery if it has a light!) as for leaving the doors unlocked - not a good idea. Check your insurance carefully - many are invalidated if you don't lock the vehicle. |

I wonder if someone could come up with a sticker saying"Sat Nav Never Left In Car" a bit like the "No Tools Left In Van Overnight" stickers you see sometimes. |

Quite . Ideally I would leave my pocket pc permanently mounted in the car, then when I get in all I would have to do it switch it on. Sadly it's much more hassle than that. |

I think that this thread has highlighted one of the problems with this forum - the inability to modify /delete your own posts. As is quite clear if you check the post times, I was not repeating what Galman was saying - we both posted the same comment at the same time!
Why can't we modify when so many other forums allow it? |

Really bad news on local radio this evening, an ambulance had its SatNav ripped off while attending to an emergency
If they will rip off an emergency vehicle, they will certainly do normal motorists.
I have sometimes been guilty of leaving my PDA in the car when stopped at service areas, but after reading this posting I will ALWAYS remove it from now on. _________________ Leigh

You might keep your no claims, but you have to declare any claims when you renew your insurance and it will increase your premium. The NCD is something that is taken off the total premium. |

So what are people suggesting we do? Take everything out of the car, including the windscreen suction mount? I always take the PPC with me, but taking the mount too would be a real PITA. |

I wasn't aware of the windscreen policy to be honest. I would have to agree with gpsdell tho. There is only so much you can do as a whole. If we are supposed to take EVERYTHING out of the car I would probably find it easier to use a paper map!!
On the other hand, I would probably leave that in the car as well and if everything else is taken out, the basterds would probably take the map.
No win situation if you ask me!! _________________ -------------------------------------------------------

It's always a difficult decision on taking the unit or leaving it in the car for short stops
I work all over the US and fly from location to location (so live in rental cars, and a fixed system in these is not an option)
When I am working I drive 400 to 500 miles a day and make up to 50 stops at stores, (some 2 minutes, some 20 minutes), some at outside stores, some at Malls, some in good areas some in bad
To shut down TomTom and remove it at each stop then reinstall and restart it each time would be totally impractical,
So I tend to leave it on the windscreen and switched on, if I nip into a single store for a couple of minutes (But these visits sometimes last a lot longer once I get inside!) (The exception to this is if there is a group of knuckle draggers hanging around the parking lot) then it comes with me anyway
If I am going into a Mall and know I will be over 15 mins I tend to take the PDA with me, (as its my phone as well),
I must admit sometimes I come back to the car (Especially in the evening and see the screen glowing away in the distance) and think its a thief magnet, but to be honest in my case the agro of keep shutting it down on every stop is more than the agro of replacing it if it was stolen
Touch Wood, in 10 years and 800,000 miles on the road (From the early days of a laptop and GPS mouse, to a modern PDA), I have never lost a unit due to theft, (But am sure my luck will run out one day)!
