TomTom Announce Launch of TomTom ONE

TomTom have today announced the launch of TomTom ONE, an all new portable navigation unit that runs TomTom Navigator. Todays launch is for the Benelux and Germany market spaces with a UK launch to follow in November.

The important featutes to note in the ONE's specification are the SiRFStarIII chipset and the apparent lack of any interface connections to the cradle so items like power and external antenna would need to be connected manually direct to the unit although SiRFStarIII will greatly reduce the situations where an external antenna is required..

However with a launch price of Euro 399 (Approx £270.00) this makes the ONE a very attractive proposition as in all other respects it is identical to the GO range and with a better chipset.

Interesting this has been launched not long after the 500 and 700...... I can't work out what's significantly different from these models....

does it have all the functionality of these systems?

Yes but as explained in another thread, no docking connector so all connections are direct to the device and it is SiRFStarIII.

Doesn't look more than the price war between TomTom and Garmin. It seems that this is TomTom's response to the Garmin i3. In any event, this is good for us the consumers. :D

Yes, I think the next 'jump' in features will be

- TMS based traffic avoidence built into all in one units like TomTom's (complete with required FM receiver). This one feature might make we jump from PDA solution I already have.

- Road speeds for all (major?) roads, leading to automaitc speed warnings. I wonder if existing TomTom hardware (processor speed/memory) would cope with this (or is all it takes is bigger maps)?

Darren, IMHO the winner is the one that will have the most accurate maps of all as this is what it is all about at the end of the day. It is no good to have all the functionality in the world if the maps are not accurate and that is what these companies should try and acheive. 8)
