|
|
TomTom have today announced the launch of TomTom ONE, an all new portable navigation unit that runs TomTom Navigator. Todays launch is for the Benelux and Germany market spaces with a UK launch to follow in November.
The important featutes to note in the ONE's specification are the SiRFStarIII chipset and the apparent lack of any interface connections to the cradle so items like power and external antenna would need to be connected manually direct to the unit although SiRFStarIII will greatly reduce the situations where an external antenna is required..
However with a launch price of Euro 399 (Approx £270.00) this makes the ONE a very attractive proposition as in all other respects it is identical to the GO range and with a better chipset.
Specifications:
CPU: 380 MHz
3.5 inch, 320 x 240 full colour TFT touch screen
Weight: 260 gram
32 MB RAM
Bluetooth data connectivity for PLUS services
USB to connect to a PC for updates
Internal rechargeable Lithium Ion battery (up to 2 hours)
Integrated GPS receiver based on SiRF Star III with 20 Channel All-in-view tracking
Operating temperature: -10 to +55 degrees C
I have added a few more images below.

Interesting this has been launched not long after the 500 and 700...... I can't work out what's significantly different from these models....
does it have all the functionality of these systems? _________________ Thanks,

Yes but as explained in another thread, no docking connector so all connections are direct to the device and it is SiRFStarIII. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Also, do you think it would be possible to vent mount the unit rather than cluttering the windscreen? |

The ONE mount has the same 'bolt' connection as the GO's so TomTom's alternative mount kits including the Vent Mount will work with this.
And yes, SiRFStarIII offers much improved reception, this is more important in those situations where reception is currently an issue i.e. coated windscreens, urban canyons etc _________________ Darren Griffin |

So, other than the connectors, is this functionally a Go 500 equivalent, or one of the other Go's?

Doesn't look more than the price war between TomTom and Garmin. It seems that this is TomTom's response to the Garmin i3. In any event, this is good for us the consumers. :D |

Equivalent to a 300 in features i.e. lacks any handsfree functionality. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Absolutely. However whilst the i3 adopted a novel approach i.e. no touch screen and a small display, what we really need to open up competition is a true competitor to TomTom Navigator's software, there is (IMHO) no such solution yet.
We need a decent UI, TomTom have this and its difficult to see how it could be significantly improved, UK 7 Digit PostCodes, a Standard/Pro option so that those users who wish to can fine tune routing algorithms, road speeds etc and of course extensive support for custom POIs. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes, I think the next 'jump' in features will be
- TMS based traffic avoidence built into all in one units like TomTom's (complete with required FM receiver). This one feature might make we jump from PDA solution I already have.
- Road speeds for all (major?) roads, leading to automaitc speed warnings. I wonder if existing TomTom hardware (processor speed/memory) would cope with this (or is all it takes is bigger maps)?

Darren, IMHO the winner is the one that will have the most accurate maps of all as this is what it is all about at the end of the day. It is no good to have all the functionality in the world if the maps are not accurate and that is what these companies should try and acheive. 8) |
