Hi Kerwin,
I do apologize for PM'ing without invitation. Obviously I have the same firmware problem you had. My unit was bought on Ebay UK back in March. I PM'ed Julie from Holux awhile ago but she's been silent so far.
Would you find possible sharing the firmware upgrade utility? I'm travelling now oversea using my GPSlim236 heavily and I need an urgent help for the initial fix problem. I have a USB cable and I'm a techie to do the upgrade myself.
Thanks a lot in advance, cheers.

I now have the updated firmware installed in my 236 :-)
MUCH BETTER!!! Getting fixes where it never got before.
A big thanks to all the people at Holux for their help.
The upgrade did not all go smoothly though,
I installed the usb drivers, plugged the cable in the pc and the 236.
It felt a little tight in the 236, but went in ok.
Installed the sirfdemo and sirfflash, but try as I might I could not get a connection via the cable (CF-FRAME all the time).
Much head scratching and a peek into the usb socket on the 236 yeilded the answer.
The new usb plug had bent and pushed one of the pins out of the connector. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
It's not as if I can plug it in wrong or anything, it only fits one way round.
Great. I NEED this to work over the weekend.
Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound.
Voiding my warranty I carefully open the case, and with the back of the usb plug exposed I managed to push the pin back in. A quick try and it pushes it back out again. Grrrrrrrrrr.
Checking the plug end of the Holux cable shows a small burr on the offending pin. A quick blast with a needle file and off we go again.
This time it's perfect. A little kapton tape over the back of the connector and off we go.
Now that we have a connection the firmware update was flawless.
Needless to say I am an electronics engineer and watch repairer in my spare time. I am used to fixing small things and know the penalties of getting it wrong.
Maybe I just had a bad cable but please be careful when inserting the USB mouse cable for the first time.
So there we have it, firmware upgraded but warranty voided. An eventful day.
btw. Nice work on the PCB Holux, very neat, shame about your cables ;-)
regards, |

Hi, i'm sorry , but I presume that I cannot release the firmware files without the permission of Holux.
Can someone from Holux confirm this???

Hi All,
Apologies for my silence - been a bit manic recently.
If you are looking for the latest firmware will you please PM me with your serial number, your email address & who you purchased the unit from.
I will then email you with a log in ID for the ftp site for you to download the firmware.
Please note: you download & install this firmware at your own peril!
If you mess it up your receiver will be bin foder!
You will need the USB data cable to be able to perform the upgrade.
Cheers,
Julie |

Hi,
It is possible to do the firmware upgrade via bluetooth but we do not recommend it.
It is not a simple procedure and it does involving switching the GPS engine into a different baud rate during the firmware installation. If the install crashes part off the way thro you will end up with the GPS sending data at the wrong baud rate for the bluetooth module. Should this happen the only way to get the receiver in a functional state again is to perform a factory reset using a data cable.
So the long & short of it is its safer to use the USB data cable or ask your reseller if they are able to perform the upgrade for you.
