7-DIGIT POSTCODES AGAIN

This is most odd - the procedure which Darren has described works for almost everybody. Ponderous, excuse me if you have tried this, but when TT5 first came out a lot of people misunderstood the menu structure, and you may have missed the relevant posts.
When you tap on Navigate to, it brings up a menu page. If you select Address and try to use a postcode, it will only accept the first 4 digits. If instead, you go to the next menu page, it brings up a Postcode icon, and this accepts the full 7 digits

Switching to the standard GB map has made a difference. It therefore appears to be a problem of available memory. I think this must have been what Mike (earlier in the thread) meant.

The number of digits is still not 7. It has increased from 4 to 5. This still only didsplays the name of the nearest postal town, but not that of the village or street - which would require all 7 digits.

Presumably I now need to find ways of using less storage memory so that it can be used for the TT 5 programme?

I'm not sure I bargained for having to dedicate my PDA to one programme, so if anyone has any more thoughts on this, I'd appreciate them please.

In the meantime, it seems this is the beginning of the solution so my thanks to all who helped.

Yes, I am using the postcode search icon. I think my post above, which must have "crossed yours on the server", illustrates what has happened - although I'd prefer not to have to uninstall other programmes.

I've now looked at the memory usage and find that of 61.75 meg Main memory, 39 meg is in use with no programmes running. This is a Dell Axim X50v.

I'm wondering if there might be a virus taking up the memory. Has anyone the knowledge on this one, please?

I know it's a big step but perhaps it's time to hard reset and start afresh?

There are no PPC viruses in the wild as yet.

I did the hard reset - after doing a Sprite backup. This reduced the Main memory in use to a very small amount.

Unfortunately, restoring the backup also restores the (apparently) phantom memory usage with no programmes running was very small. This presumably means I am into what I understand to be a nightmare scenario - persuading TomTom to accept the need for a new activation code.

Before I start down this road, can anyone tell me, please, is the memory usage as one would expect with TT 5 loaded (but no programmes actually running). Also, is it actually possible to get the postcode facility to work right down to street level?

I never thought I'd ever say this, but why can't TomTom take a leaf from Copilot's book and devise a straightforward re-installation facility.

Firstly I would not restore, the backup will simply recreate the issue you have. Is there anything on there you cannot re-install from scratch?

You will not need to re-activate TomTom, it knows this device has been activated and will recognose it is the same hardware so the unlock key is still valid.

Thanks, Darren. That's a relief. There is nothing that I can't re-install so presumably I shall soon be up and running.

Whether or or not that is the case, could I say that my experience with TomTom 5 has showed me this website working at its best. What would we do without it???

Yes i know im new to this forum and tomtom in particular but i wasnt offering to upload a pirated version of the software, i was merely offing to upload 1 file, the great_britain.postal file.
With my legit copy of tomtom the 7 digit search was not installed so i presume the 7 digit part is a 'hack' or update of the software. So how can it be against the licensing agreements for me to offer to help someone out with one file?
Im not meaning to sound cocky or rude, just a little bewidered that i got told off for something i dont 'believe' is a licensing issue.
Surely its the same as adding the new speed camera database off this site, both file modify the software from the standard install, so why is one ok and not the other?

I found this site by accident and it has helped me greatly with my new pda etc and so wanted to put a little back in.

The 7 Digit PostCode comes as part of a map upgrade. If you haven't paid for this upgrade then you are not entitled to the additionalo PostCode functionality.

We had a problem when installing TT5,1 on to my mates x50V - full European copy, purchased off TomTom direct (I bought it). He installed everything, including the "plus" map (which includes Major roads of Europe as well as the UK map) - when he came into work on the Monday - no full postcode. I used active sync to install the correct file from the "add maps" page, there is a tick box to select UK post code. - it failed to install complaining of a lack of memory, this is a new device so perhaps there is a problem with the applications Dell load up prior to shipping the pda.
I got it to install in the end - since this we have deleted the zip folder in the my documents and its OK - (Thanks to Darren - thumbs down to the TomTom site as they told us to put it there), my point WRT the rubish installer is that it demands empty folders in specific places but it doesn't create them, hence the confusion that people experiance - Mutley 282 you want to add anything to this? - Mike

At last I can report that I have 7-digit postcodes!! I also have plenty of memory to spare with TomTom loaded. It will be interesting to see if the fun and games start again as I add back the other applications.

It may be worth summarising with a few points that I have learned along the way:

Idea

The TT 5 upgrade Setup utility has to be copied from CD 1 onto hard disk for it to run (at least on my computer, that is).

Once the Setup utility is working (see 1), and the SD card is selected for the installation, the Zip folder containing the postcodes will automatically be placed where Darren said all along; i.e. in the root of the SD card.

However, the user will have to create an empty folder named TomTom in the root of the sd card.

Any other occurrences of the Zip folder that might appear (e.g. in the My Documents folder will need to be removed,.

Until conditions 2, 3 and 4 are satisfied, 7-digit postcodes will not work.

All may not be as it appears. In my case, the situation was confused by a memory error.

Don't be too quick to condemn the programme. I was convinced that TomTom 5 was dangerous as it often gave late turn instrictions and then recalculated too slowly to re-route in time for a subsequent turn. Now I hope that solving this memory problem will solve that problem too.
