Given that this unit has laser detection built in, is it not at risk of being made illegal by the new law being proposed (I've not kept up with the plans, so this may not be an issue anymore)?

The laser detector on the Drivesmart is the only one that can be turned on and off from the user menu.
In the event that that law ever got passed(seems very unlikely now and a very long way off if ever,A simple software update would be available to disable the laser detection system to make it 100% legal and fit into any new laws :D(This update would also be apprved by our legal team as well)

Reading the interesting posts about Drivesmart it occurs to me that laser detectors may not be of any use.

How long does a target have to be lasered for, in order to give a speed reading? If its almost instantaneous, surely once the detector gives an alert, its too late to slow down. Or is it?

3 readings are taken and it the lowest one they will prosecute you for.
See the video on our forum here or more info on how laser workshttp://www.drive-smart.co.uk/insideout[1].rm
What is interesting is it is difficult to lock on some times so you would have plenty of warning to slow down(well 3-4 seconds)!Laughing Out Loud :D

While the comments regarding the usefulness of laser detectors are largely true insofar as by the time you detect them, they generally have a reading on you, the detection of modern laser detectors on some units is surprisingly good.

I have a bell euro 550 as a back-up to the GPS detection and it screams its head off every time I get targetted or cars in front of me get targetted by camera vans. In fact the re-facing detection has even picked them up when I was travelling away from one!

The laser detector on the Drivesmart is just part of the product and it works correctly as it should do and the Pulse Master external detector is unique as it was designed purely to detect laser from safety vans at close range.
You must be talking about mobile radar i.e a mini gatso's(k band radar) with your Bell 550 as you will not detect laser from safety vans with the unit on your dash board.
Also you would not detect laser at all if it was aimed at the number plate of the vehicle in front of you and specially not with the BELL 550 on your dash board.
Safety vans do not target your windscreen(see the BBC video on our web site)and unless you drive a Lamborghini it would be impossible to do so as the beam width is less than 13cm at 300 meters.
If you are coming to the GPS show we will show you that it is impossible to detect laser from your dash board mounted unit(we will aim at your number plate and show you) when the area targeted by safety vans is your number plate. :D

Sorry, but I have to disagree. I have been targetted by several camera vans and the Bell unit has functioned perfectly. How do I know, simple the unit alarms!!. Given the area I live in, there are no other spurios laser sources and isn't strange that it goes off when I am approaching these vans and they have the rear window down and a camera pointing out the back.

Well all i can say is that you have a car where the number plate to dash board is within approx 13cm of each other(You have a Lamborghini style vehicle) or your bell is unique at detecting laser?
Anyway come along to the GPS show so you can try your unit with some of the popular laser guns used in the UK.

We are just about to release a software update UKHAN 1.1.33 with the speed camera detection industries first SPECS calculator.
These software updates are free to the users of the Drivesmart unit.
The Calculator works by assessing the speed limit of the SPECS area and then compares this to your vehicle speed when entering the SPECS area.
The system will display the distance you have travelled in the SPECS area on the LCD and in the right hand corner you will see how much under or over the variable speed limit you are travelling.
If you exceed the variable speed limit at any stage the Drivesmart will give you a "Speed too fast voice alert" you should not here this alert at all if you have been keeping an eye on the variable speed limit display.

I found the official website very poor, as it does not say anything about what this device can do and does not show any photos of the unit in action.

They might just as well be selling a lump of clay.

So you did not check the specification out on our site or read the forum?
All the information and pictures of the unit running are there.
