Memory-Map announce Version 5

I've just spoken to MM to get one of my maps replaced FOC (actually they want £10 for handling but they owe me that already - see previous post) so I get it free.

Apparently they are taking a lot of flack from unhappy customers who will not be able to upgrade without buying all new maps. This stuff about OS not letting them use the old maps with the new software is a smokescreen to milk us. As I said to them, I would have been happy to pay £50 for new software to use with existing maps, but to have to by new maps to use with what is effectively free software is just nuts.

I will be venting my frustration at a high level within MM. They have done htemselves no favours with this crazy upograde.

What a complete rip-off! memory map - shame on you.
Having just bought 2004 version & maps 1-6, they now tell me im going to have to fork out again as my maps wont work on the so called "free" upgrade.
Even worse - i just bought maps 7-12, after reading on the box " requires memory map software for map printing and gps programming"

No where on the box does it state that it will only work on the previous 2001 version, although it shows an OS copyright logo for 2002 it doesnt give a software version or any statement about incompatability.

I believe that memory - map are deliberately misleading the customer, getting us to purchase software which is quickly obsolete.

Legally i reckon disgruntled customers could have a claim with trading standards with respect to the cover stating that memory map software (not mentioning anything about version) is required.

I urge all of you to do as i do and complain to your local trading standards office.

I welcome comments from other users and if memory map are watching - explain to me why you dont mention about version incompatability on your product packaging!

Well it may be a fact that OS are holding us and MM to ransome BUT:

1) It is up to MM to negociate with them (OS) and find a way of providing an upgrade without forcing us all to buy new maps.

2) They (MM) should not immediately 'dump' all of their existing customers by withdrawing the 2004 series maps. There will be many like me who have an incomplete set of maps and were gradually building up a portfolio of regions of interest. Now we are well and trully shafted. We have to either buy all new maps or have to run two different software versions with different capabilities.

What MM have done stinks and I think that the directors should lined up against a wall and every other one should be shot! That should concentrate the minds of the survivors to look after thier customers.

Concerning your second point first, the latest "2006" maps WILL run on MM2004, and since MM have nearly doubled the size of the smaller 50k regions, can be better value.

I can see why the OS need to protect their licenses against *major* upgrades in software functionality. But the Memory Map v.5 improvements seem quite small to me, and I believe are a free upgrade elsewhere in the World. As such, it seems morally acceptable to "convert" 2004 maps that one has purchased to work with v.5, and it's a pity that a thread with the method has been removed from this site.

AllyCat,

You are correct. Here in the US, we pay no cost to upgrade to the latest version of Memory-Map. As the US maps can be found in many places free of charge (provided you have the time to download them), there is no cost for the most recent upgrade.

I have MM 2004 with these maps
Central Regions 3 - 8 1:50000
The Peak District 1:25000
Personal Selection 1:25000

To upgrade these at the so-called "Discount" would cost me about £190 which is ludicrous as none of the map data will have changed in the slightest, so for a minor software upgrade I am paying someone - MM or OS?? - a lot of cah.
I can't think this is of any value and will carry on with MM 2004

OS got back to me yesterday, at the second attempt to purchase the whole of the UK at 1:25,000 scale, as expected the price is high at 2,500 UK - but its still way cheaper than the buy, by circle method - I need this for a work related project, but I won't be too happy when it costs the same next year to upgrade to the new maps - this will be a deciding factor when we consider the purchase (OS and MM Take note) - Mike

i dont see the point in upgrading there dosnt seem to be anything different in the latest one i theought it might be good to connect my smartphone nokia 6680 and put it on that but cant get it to work nor is there anything in the instructions on how to do it ah well dont think ill be getting it

Existing Memory-Map OS 2004 users can pay for an upgrade to V.5 and get a discount on return of their original discs - OS 2004 maps won't work with the new V.5 software...

For example the whole of UK OS 1:50,000 can be purchased for £120 instead of the full price of £200.

The Version 5 OS maps appear to be quite up to date - but read on.....

Beware that your PC will need a DVD player to install the new maps which are supplied on DVD disc, so if you only have a CD-ROM drive and have sent back your original CD-ROM map discs as required ( and haven't kept a "back up copy" Rolling Eyes

) - then you're stuffed !

Much worse is Memory-Map's advertised "upgrade" to "Premium Edition" which, in addition to the OS 1:50.000 map DVD(s) includes "Aerial Photography" and costs an extra £60 for the upgrade version, or an extra £100 at full price if you're not upgrading.

What do you get for your extra 60 or a 100 pounds ???? - Let me tell you - You get another couple of DVD's worth of digital aerial photography of the UK - the imagery is from 1999 - THAT'S 8 YEARS OLD ! :x

Hardly what I would call "Premium" or even "Upgrade" - DISGUSTING ! Evil or Very Mad

There should be a law against advertising imagery that old as a "Premium Edition Upgrade" - Oh hang on - there is - isn't it called the Trade Descriptions Act Confused
