Which GPS system can do all of this...

Hi all, I currently use TomTom navigator for the Palm for my travels in Europe. I'm shortly leaving Europe to go home to New Zealand. TomTom has no maps for NZ as far as I know. On my way home I'm shipping my car to the USA and will be driving across the US from the East to West coast. I need a GPS system that will allow me to program in way points as I want to avoid free-ways, since I'll be trying to stick to good driving roads. In addition I want to be able to use it in NZ. The only unit I've found so far that fits the bill is the Navman 650.

My other choice is to buy a gps receiver for use with Microsofts Streets and trips. But this will only tell me where I am not where to turn off etc. The car is a Lotus Elise so there's not really room to mount a lap top in a position where it can be seen easily or held in place firmly enough for the kind of roads I'll be driving on.

My current route is here. All the waypoints are positions I had to put in to force the software to use the roads I want - hence my reason for needing a unit that can do the same.

What exactly do you need? Recommendations for Palm software or assurance that the Navman can handle it?

In a nutshell I'm after a product that will work in NZ as well as the States. It must be able to accept waypoints so I can plan my own route i.e use roads the GPS would not normally route me on.

The NAVMAN 650 can accept waypoints and maps for NZ are available. My current system TomTom Navigator for the Palm doesn't have maps for NZ and I presume I would need to buy another copy of it in the States since I have the European maps. The Navman is not cheap but at least it will work in NZ.

The cheap solution is to just buy a USB GPS receiver for my laptop and use it with Microsoft Streets and Trips, but as I mentioned it's not nearly as practical as a standalone unit.

Then go with the Navman. There are US/Canada maps available, and you already know how to use it.

I haven't bought the Navman yet. I'm just wondering if there is a cheaper solution than having to buy the top of the range Navman. If it's the 650 then so be it. Is there a limit on the number of waypoints? Is the US map, one map going down to street level or do you need to switch to State maps to get the minor roads? The marketing stuff seems to indicate you don't need to switch maps.

I like the look of the navman software...sorry to butt in but I just wanted to know if we can use that with any pocket pc?
