I have just got my first GPS receiver, a Socket the same as this:
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=115443
but in a Black OEM case.
It seems to take forever to pick up a satellite (no green flashing light)
Last night in my garden it had about 4 or 5 satellites, but this morning nothing.
I live near Wimbledon and drove up into town and didnt get a satellite until i reached Westminster. Now i'm sure this can't be right, so should I be replacing the unit immediately or have I missed something?
TIA. |

Are you using TT5? TT5 appears to have an annoying habit of resetting the gps receiver if it doesn't find a fix in a limited period of time.
To get around it try giving the receiver sometime to fix before starting TT. |

Yes, I am using TT5.
I dont think it will make a difference as I think I have tried different variations of turnng on/off/starting tt5 etc, but i'll give it a try to make sure.
thanks. |

So, with my PDA off, I placed the unit outside and switched on.
No fix still after half an hour, gave it a few whacks and still nothing.
About 10-15 minutes later, i noticed the green LED flashing, so i guess that means the unit is duff. |

This particular unit....Socket OEM GPS, is very slow to obtain a fix. Fortunately, it has a hardware switch and doesn't power down if no fix is present. So the best bet is to switch it on at least 10 mins before you need it, then switch it off again........then on, to force a warm start. This works for my Grandson who has one.
To be fair, this device costs £68 so you (he) got what you (he) paid for. |

Thanks.
As it turns out, i think i had a dodgy unit.
Got it replaced, and it gets a fix pretty quickly now. |
