I've used Tomtom for a couple of weeks now (in London) and lately I've noticed a problem with the map. Occasionally, when I stop (at a traffic light for instance) the map seems to turn 90 degrees (as if I turned) and then go back to pointing ahead, all this without me actually turning the car. The same happends sometimes when I turn, the map will turn in the other direction and then turn back.
Does this ring any bells with anyone?
I thought of problems with the GPS or maybe the SD card speed (kingston 1GB dont know the speed but paid £40 so don't think it's a high speed one) but have not got a clue. _________________ Toshiba e750 wifi + Belkin Bluetooth CF card

When you are stopped TT is trying to guess your direction. As there's no movement of position, it must be looking for inspiration. :D
When you make a sudden turn TT might lose a sat for a sec or so, before it picks up another, and then has to wait for the necessary data to be received. _________________ Richard

Anything I can to do help it? Choose particular songs on the radio?
Keep a coffe-table book next to the PDA about renaissance paintings maybe? _________________ Toshiba e750 wifi + Belkin Bluetooth CF card

Well I just look at the PDA angrily and the map spins back into place. Then next junction when my eyes are on the road the cheeky little thing does it again. I look at it and it's back to position. Then I look at the traffic light for a sexond and there it goes again. It's like it knows it's annoying me...

When I did some evaluation with my polstar bt, I found the map would spin if I placed receiver on passenger seat. As soon as I placed it back on dashboard it was ok. So, maximum view of satellites seems essential to overcome some of this problem. Maybe tall buildings give the same scenario. |

Hi exfive
Reading the questions on this forum shows that TT5 works fine with certain PDAs and certain GPS receivers. For instance I have a ipaq 2210 and a BT338 and I get no troubles at all. I have also noticed on the forum that other people with the same set-up as myself are also pleased with TT5. When one buys a programme for a Desk Top computer it doesn’t make any difference if the computer is a ‘Dell, Gateway or Evesham’ the program will run with no trouble. However, buy TT5 for your PDA and you are in the lap of the Gods. |

Hi Trevor,
Well I don't think it's the PDA. The only conclusion I can think of is that it must be the GPS unit? Although I've got a Sirf III unit so maybe it's not functioning correctly and needs to be replaced?

It does indeed happen when the GPS unit is on the passenger seat. But should this really happen with a Sirf III unit? (sysonchip smart blue mini) _________________ Toshiba e750 wifi + Belkin Bluetooth CF card

Seems like my Polstar bt pbt-111 has the Sony's newest 3rd generation solution GPS SOC chip CXD 2951. Sounds very impressive but some of the write ups give this chipset a poor review. I often thought the speed of my Ipaq 3870 was to blame when I was already past roads showing on my tomtom5 but I now realise it may well be a SLOW Polstar receiver. It appears that the Globalsat BT can beat the oppositon hands down. I originally purchased the Polstar because I liked the idea that I can use 3AAA batteries in it, and thought it would last longer than BT receivers with a fixed rechargeable inside which could not be replaced in some instances. Maybe I should have gone for performance rather than how many times fixed rechargeable batteries can be recharged before they are finished thus rendering the gps redundant.

Isn't this because some GPS units (and also navigation programs) ignore changes in position of under a certain distance?
So if your GPS stated position is shifting around by about 2m, the unit ignores this as it is within the HDOP region.
If every little movement in GPS position is read as a movement, the program will respond by rotating heads up in the direction the last apparent movement was made. |
