not too smart with these sat navs, So can anyone tell me why its so hard to lock onto satellites ? The other day i drove 88 miles before it locked onto any satellites, they are showing up but it never locks onto them. I run a navman with a compaq pocket pc running tom tom 5. Ps.. when i ran tom tom 3 it locked onto satellites in seconds and stayed locked on. |

There ya go, sat in truck for 20 mins watched as more sats connected, then all of a sudden it locked onto five sats, left it for about 5mins then turned tom tom off as i have been told to do, then switched everything off, left it for 5mins switched it back on selected tom tom, went to check for a lock on and... took only 5 sec to lock on with a full siginal from 5 sats, have to see if driving round town etc tomorow works out. A big thank you to all who helped, I may still need you tomorow if things go wrong. |

you see this effect when the base tables are corrupt or mising. Allow 12+ minutes to load them again. _________________ Lutz

Went out for a drive today, connected the sat nav in windscreen bracket and switched on, drove for about half a mile to post office, no lock as yet, waited outside post office then a lock on three sats, thought... this is fantastic it works! drove round corner, lost connection it never came back, had to turn sat nav off and back on again then wait another five mins for it to lock onto the sats, then after about two mins it looses the sat lock again. it's like the recever wont hold onto the sats for more than five mins before it disconects. This is the post code for my area NG16 4FX so as you see there should be no problems with a week siginal, can someone please help me with this as tom tom 3 worked fine but it was just a bit out dated. |

TTN5 seems to try and re-initialise the receiver when it thinks the reception is bad. Not very helpful especially with older receivers that take longer to initialise. _________________ Lutz

Try holding the receiver outside the car while powered up and see if it gets a fix quicker. The reflective glass in some windscreens degrades the signal

Just a thought...I have the satnav in a pajero, these have a pod ontop of the dash with a digital compass and two other displays could it be interfering with the satnav? should i place it to the right of the dashboard where there are no parts with power going through them. then again it has been sat in my window bottom at home and had a lock on three sats and only held onto them for about 5 mins before loosing them. I would say the signal strength before it lost the lock was about 70%. Is there any way to increase the gain to boost the reception? |

Just got home from a 5 mile trip and it never lost the sat lock, do you think that the more i use it the better it gets? I remember when i used tom tom 3 that took a while to settle down. moto..."the more you use it the better it get's" |

Just a small suggestion but have you checked that the infrared is turned off on the iPaq?
I know that the navman sleeve (I think the iPaq sleeve is a rebadged navman) needs the iPaq infrared turned off as it interfers with the receiver. Sudden changes in brightness cause the receiver to loose satellites. I know this from bitter experience! _________________ Steveee
