How can it be proved that it isn’t the PocketGPSWorld camera database? Can we demand a copy to check against our database and to ensure that the special dummy cameras which are a unique signature of the PocketGPSWorld camera database are not included in the eBay item?

Well if it's not the PocketGpsWorld database then it must be copied from someone elses and i'm sure that they would also claim copyright on their data. |

Hi the_questioner,

Taking my PocketGPSWorld moderator hat off for a moment. Personally I have no problems with anybody selling another camera database as long as that database in question has never been based (in full or in part) on the free PocketGPSWorld one.
The PocketGPSWorld camera database has taken some time to get to where it is. A lot of people (myself included) have freely donated the details of camera sites (including the longitude and latitude coordinates) solely to the PocketGPSWorld camera database.
Placing my PocketGPSWorld moderator hat back on, we have seen other databases where the longitude and latitude of each camera site is exactly the same as those on the free PocketGPSWorld camera database. I remember one example where one of the camera sites submitted by myself was physically incorrect, as the camera had moved just after I had taken the details – and the exact same coordinates error was found on another database. Plus we have a number of dummy camera sites that can each act as an identifier of our database.
Unfortunately there are a few people who are out for a quick buck. As our camera database is free to download it would be nice for the seller to send us their database if we request it, so that we can check whether it’s ours or not. Don’t forget that the seller can already download our database without even asking as it’s a freely available resource that we wish to share with everybody – we just don’t want lowlifes profiteering out of our intellectual property.

This is one thing that we are considering, but you need to bear in mind that there is no way to identify the database after it has been downloaded. Therefore we would not be able to indentify the user who is selling the database. _________________ Mike Barrett |

And he's sold 3 !!!!!!
Here's a suggestion:-
1. Make the donload only available to registered users.
2. Like TOMTOM, link the user ID into the .OV2 file upon downloading.
This encryption isn't rocket science and then, when people start selling them on ebay, all you have to do is get one and check the ID and you have the source of where the file came from. |

Not entirely. We had a number of offers to list an ebay sale with a prohibive cost or £0.00 and a clear link to our site but I declined those that came direct to me. Whilst we appreciate the best intentions, such sales cloud the issue and are in some cases a breach of eBay's own rules. _________________ Darren Griffin |

If anyone has one of these items listed please can you remove it otherwise when we report them you will get a black mark against your account.
Please do this in the next 2 hours as we are preparing a todays report. _________________ Mike Barrett |

This guy is not actually doing anything wrong. He clearly states he is selling a link. If people are prepared to pay for that rather then googling for it then that is their choice.
A search for "speed camera database" will put us at the top of the results. _________________ Mike Barrett |
