Posted: Thu Sep 01, 2005 10:06 am Post subject: Road Priorities - Mapping Error or Bad Programming ?
In the relatively short time that I have been using TT5, I have noticed many instances where the road priority on the ground differs from what is displayed on TT5.
For example, I could be driving along an 'A' road, and arrive at a T-Junction where I have to give way. The 'A' road continues to the right, and a 'B' road turns off to the left.
However, if continuing on the 'A' road, TT5 does not give any instruction to turn right. It seems to assume that because I am still routed on the 'A' road, the 'A' road must have priority and no actual turn is required.
The reality is different as I have to give way and turn right. I have found this very confusing in unfamiliar areas as I arrive at a junction with no instruction of which way to turn.
Is this a mapping error, ie inaccurate TeleAtlas maps, or TT5 not recognising the actual priority of the road ? Is it worth reporting these instances to either party ?

Are you sitting comfortably? Good, then I shall recant to you a true story that I have about mapping.
A few months ago I was sitting in a lay-by on the A14 when a people carrier type van pulled up. It was bristling with antenna and full of computer equipment.
Curiosity being my downfall in life, when the two guys de-bussed from the vehicle I seized upon the opportunity to ask what exactly they were doing.
They were driving the roads, inputing the details relevent to the mapping software. They told me if they drive down a one way street, the guy in the back input the relevant data into the computer, such as the start point, end point and direction of travel etc.
"But the van is too bloody hot!" the passenger moaned. The driver laughed and said that "At least I don't fall asleep like him! Thats why we have had to stop, so he can have a walk about!" "Well at least the aircon works in the front" he replied.
"So do you have to go back and do it all again if he falls asleep and misses a road then?" I asked the driver. The driver replied that no, they did not as they did not have time as they were given targets to meet and their work was continuously logged.
So next time the mapping software tells you to go the wrong way down a one way street, or misses a junction, it is the fault of the muppets in the van.....
I find it infuriating where a 'main road' has a left hand bend with a minor road or unclassified road sort of goes straight on. TT3 says nothing, but wants me to leave the main road and travel straight on.
I want a "ding dong, wake up stupid, you've left the route I planned for you" warning.
