I've been using the Mio & TT3 quite happily for a year or so and I eventually upgraded to V5. I really like the software apart from the lack of avoids (what were they thinking) and the effect it's having on the Mio's battery life.
I usually ran the Mio with V3 at full brightness for around 3.5 hrs before I needed to start thinking about the charger but now, with V5, I just cant get anymore than 2~2.5 hrs max before it totally runs out.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution?
The power settings in the Mio utility seem to have no effect at all on consumpton at all!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Ravi

This is a known bug in TTN5 (running the processor at 100% load all the time). So far no fix is in sight.

When I used TTN 5 with my Treo 650, the phone got unusually hot, in fact so hot, it was almost too hot to handle.
If that is going to happen with my Mio, I'll stick with my Co-pilot, bugs and that crappy voice withstanding!

My suspicion is that the new smooth map scrolling is to blame for that. As we all know the GPS position is only updated once a second, but TomTom have started to update the screen more often - about four times per second, doing some extrapolations. Clearly this must put quite a strain on the processor, and draw a lot of power.

I can live with a slightly jumpy map display if that would reduce the processor load.

I agree with first poster.
One of the (many) disappointments I've had with TT5 has been the decrease in battery charge time on my Mio 168. I would guess that this will eventually lead to a shorter "overall" lifetime for my units battery as well.

It's interesting to hear the theory that the TT5 map updates 4 times a sec, using interpolation, to prevent "jumping". Sounds plausible.

The irony is that the TT5 map may not "jump" like TT3, but instead it tends to spin madly and "hunt" when leaving a parking space/rest stop/ industrial site. Annoying.

The only real improvement I see in TT5 so far, as a travelling sales rep up and down the country, is that the advanced route planning is simpler, and the street names on the NAV screen are a neat feature. Not necessary really, but nice for keeping track of where one is. The travel "via" is also handy for forcing an alternate route.

The 7 digit postcode feature has turned out to be not so useful to me. In the last week most postcodes I have entered for Homebase/B&Q stores have NOT matched their address. !?!Perhaps that's due to the site size of this type of business. Although you still need a house number for many residential addresses anyway.

After some thought, it occured to me that it's a bit silly to head out on a visit without a street name and number...

Not being able to change my Motorway speed to 54 MPH has been a huge drawback, for my lorry and/or traffic situations.

Hey, no "memorize position"? Arghh, that was great for locations that I only needed for a day or 2 and then never again. Pass a pizza place on the way from the hotel? Bang! memorize this, MF, see you tonight !

What, no PDA button functions? Oh No so much for my Mio's one-touch map-view/mute/scale/volume! *sniff*

in fact the list goes on and on...

It's the "Emporer's new TT" I guess...only the truly wise see it as an improved product.
I ain't never, no-how!

TT6 anyone?
