Hi ,
I have searched the forum and the web to find the answer to the above question. Unfortunately yet to find an answer.

I am trying to set up the TTG300 to indicate my traveling speed and the speed limit on the road (and perhaps a warning if I am speeding !)

1. Can the TTG300 measure my traveling speed (Velocity) ?
2. Is there a database which can be used to indicate speed on roads (similar to the camera POI database)
3. can the TTG300 be set to warn if I am speeding.

Many thanks in advance. 8O

1.Yes, it can measure and display your speed.

2.I don't think so, I have read on this site that teleatlas are working to add speed limits to map data but it would be some time before this appears on Tomtom and I can't see it being a free upgrade.

3.Once the data becomes available it would be easy for TT to allow warnings, but without the map-speed data it's a no at the moment. POI's aren't really much of an option since you would need one or more for every road. Not sure how many the TT could cope with; I suppose there could be a project to allow us to contribute to a free database, not sure if there's one running already.

There must be some sort fo speed data for each road in order for it to work out the ETA

Well just to add to my reply about TT adding speed limits to the map data it appears these won't be actual speed limits but a guess based on the road type and locality type. Here is what the article says on the subject:

Quoted from: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/teleatlas-visit-aug05.php

Quote:
"Tele Atlas will be adding value to the data already in the database. This will include better classification of road types, and adding speed limits. The addition of speed limits will include both actual speed limit and average speed. The actual speed will be dependant on the road class and the classification of the locality. Therefore a UK 'B' class road within town limits will be 30MPH."

This could still be used as a basis for a warning system except it would be nothing you could rely on. Seems the best speed warning system is going to be your eyes looking for the signs for some time to come! I can imagine people trying to use the fact that TT gave them the incorrect speed limit as a defense in court though Laughing

I don’t know if I'm the only one who has noticed but good speed signs (and repeater signs) seem to becoming ever more of a rarity these days! At the very least there should have to be one on the approach to every speed camera!

Yes, but think how much revenue the camera partnerships would lose if it was easy to work out what the speed limit was!

Yes, I knowe we are going a bit off topic but I would like to see in England a similar system they use in Scotland; 3 or 4 sets of signs 100m apart, so it wil say 30 - 300m , 30 - 200m, 30-100m , 30 ! It's kind of hard to ignore that.

I've also been thinking how could a free database be coded? You could put the cords and road of each speed change and then you need to take into account the direction ie a speed change has a speed before it and a speed after it. I suppose if we could slowly build a database then we would need TT or third party developer to allow the TT to process this data. Once up and running though more people would hopefully want to contribute. A big project and what comes first the chicken or the egg??
