Hi Steve
I'm buying one :o
My warranty is nearly out and I don't want to take the chance. I thought it was safe after all this time but there have been two reports today of leads of similar age going bang. It will cost a bit but at least I have peace of mind.

Is the new lead with the clear fuse the one that has melted in a couple of 700's so far? _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

interesting further development from my expansys experience.
they contacted tomtom re cost of getting an out of warranty repair done and got a quote of 175 EUR plus TBD shipping costs......
i'm glad i'm getting it replaced by tomtom for free under warranty - they unlike expansys were prepared to accept that my tom tom blew up whilst under 1 year warranty even though i was contacting them 10 days later since i was on vacation.
if I wasnt getting the free replace i'd be seriously p'd off at spending what was 450gbp at the time on something that blew up after 1 year and then have to shell out 120 gbp plus on top.... |

mcgora,
You are not alone. Had my TTG Classic since Oct and just today, it stopped working. My TTG became very hot and a burning smell. I pressed the reset button for 15 seconds but green light only turns on if I press the power button. I'm afraid it's been fried. I just got a new mount and upgraded my SD card. I'm going to call TT tomorrow for a repair and I hope they are good enough to swap/exchange one for me.
I think my car charger had a surge that blew it up. How can I prevent this from happening next time?
TTG has been very good to me. |

This is the reply I have just got from TT customer services about the car charger with the cerise (pink) fuse, albeit after a weeks wait!!
'We are not aware of any issues with the CLA , if any Tomtom item fails within the warranty period it will be replaced' .
I had even sent them copies of some of the examples on this forum!
Cheers

If it's fried as expected thru a faulty power surge, do you guys think the SD in the unit at the time of the incident is still ok? I hope so because I just purchased the SD 1GB last week! |

Hi ajlee7
Sorry to hear about your TomTom, try the sd card in a reader if it works in that then it should be ok.

Thanks. I don't have a SD reader but will hope for the best. The good news is I called TT's toll free number and since it's under the 1yr waranty all I need to do is send it back to their factory. They will evaluate it in 2-3 days and determine to fix or send a repalcement. That's great service. |

In the UK, don't forget that regardless of the 1 year warranty, the Sale of Goods Act says:
"For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement)."
The "up to" depends on the type of item and how long you would normally expect it to last. Something like a £500 SatNav would be expected to last longer than a year - especially if you can show that a design fault in their charger blew it up.
If you use a different company's charger and that blows it up, you'd be stuck.
Regards,
Mark. |

update is not good for me - getting well p'd off with their cust service.
2nd Sept and still no replacement tom tom.
after being asked for 50Eur to cover repair, I had to raise a "question" on their website that took 2wks to be turned around. The fee was waived.
They then shipped me a tomtom, but somehow between them and UPS, it showed up at my works mail room as an empty packet.
I have now raised another "question" and got a response 2wks later of "we are looking into it".
So 6wks in and still no replacement.
The customer service line sucks - you can NEVER get to speak to anyone.
All you get is the patronising message "get help the easy way at tomtom.com".
