Re: Activation, I thought the activation covered the TomTom software not the maps. Is this incorrect?

I guess this only way I'm going to find out the answer to whether this works is to buy it. Looking at the US TomTom site and the suppliers they recommend I'm not convinced it is actually shipping yet.

Good - sounds like they've listened to customer feedback - though the maybe is a little worrying!

All people were asking for was equality to the situation for those that bought the USA version - who could buy the European map set as 'maps only'. It seemed wrong that European users had to buy the software again, though I do understand that the most important thing was to get the product into the marketplace.

I take it all back. I have just received a reply from TomTom that may be of interest to you....

Thanks for your mail. USA Maps only are currently not available without software. They maybe made available to the European market as maps only in a few weeks and an announcement along these lines should be posted on the EU edition of www.tomtom.com soon.

I had a reply from TomTom when I asked them if it is/will be possible to download regional maps of the USA. It ignores my question and reads:-

Thanks for your mail and for your interest in TomTom products, the USA maps (

for now ) will only be available in the USA

They then provided a link to one of their web pages with U.S. retailers selling the maps with software.

This isnt much help. I have replied to it to try and find out if there will be a map only version.

OK so I splashed out and bought the Natigator 2 USA - it works! I have just installed the maps along side my UK installation of Navigator 2 and although I've not tried in the US yet the demo mode seems to do everything it should. Hopefully it will work in the US when I'm there in 3 week time.

Absolutely, Neil - point taken. It just seems a shame that for now you have to buy the software again. Hopefully TomTom will address this in the near future.

DavidW, I take your point about getting just the maps but if I could get anything I'd be happy!.

I have just asked TomTom the following question and their reply follows: "Could you tell me whether I can install TomTom Navigator UK and USA on the same Pocket PC?"

Reply: "It is possible to install these programmes on one PDA."

As my holiday is approach fast I think I'll try buying the whole s/w package.

I think they do sell the Software only as in this link. A 4 day shipping in not bad either.

Sorry guy's, don't know what I'm talking about. It's the software and not just the maps.

Again, that's Navigator 2 software and maps. I believe what people are asking for (and certainly what I've been talking about in this thread) is a map only product for those that already own a European country version of TomTom Navigator.

Yes, I have spoken with TomTom about this and they are aware of the requirements of a lot of users, and are currently looking into this. All I can say is watch this space...

Neil,

All TomTom maps require activation. Your original country map has one and the European Maps another.

I assume when the US maps become available they will require a third.
