Hello all. I have a TTG 700 and I charge it to full and then switch it off. If I then go ad switch it on a coule of days later the battery is half drained. I use it mostly via the ciagrette lighter of course, but should it do this? is it a common problrm? Can it be stopped? Much help appreciated. |

Don't know long the TTGO will hold its charge for but any kind of rechargeable battery will lose charge when not in use. _________________ Ray

I have a 300 and after several weeks of not being used and charged it is still over half full.
It is a good idea to do a conditioning cycle - fully discharge the battery by leaving the TomTom on until it shuts down - then fully charge it again. (you should do this every so often to maintain the battery).
There is no danager that you have knocked it on in the case? if you put it in the wrong way you might be catch the on button? _________________ J. |

I'd have to disagree on this one. The TTGO uses a Li-Ion battery, which is not user replaceable. These type of batteries do not suffer from memory effect and obviously can only be charged discharged a limited number of times. _________________ Ray

Yes the Li-Ion batteries do not suffer from memory effect - however some manuals/advice seem to suggest that you should condition the battery, especially for the first (two or three) charge cycle - the capacity is very reduced in these first few cycles. However you can happy top up Li-Ion regularly (in fact it is the best way for most of their life) - something that kills Ni-Cad batteries very quickly.
There is an issue with systems that have a battery monitor called "digital memory" - basically the calibration drifts and the estimate for how full/empty is off - so periodic charge discharge is recommend. I don't know whether this applies to a TomTom Go.
Finally how do you make the jump "no memory effect = limited number of charge/discharge cycles"
Li-Ion do have limited charge/discharge cycles - and life (about 1000/3 years) but I don't think it is anything to do with lack of memory effect. _________________ J. |

What I was trying so say was
1 Lo-Ion batteries do not suffer from memory effect like Ni-cads.
2 Lo-Ion batteries (or any kind) do not last forever.
Conclusion
Don't bother fully charging then fully discharging your go to help extend the battery life because it won't. Battery manufacturers DO NOT recommend fully discharging Lo-Ion batteries and they will last longer if only partly discharged. _________________ Ray

As I pointed out there are over reasons for doing a charge discharge/cycle than battery life - and if you do once as much as once month, it is unlikely to notice compared to natural decay.
And based on the fact the battery will last longer if not fully discharged - don't you think the battery will be dying sooner, rather than later if it discharges quickly as the OP suggests. _________________ J. |

In my opinion fully discharging a lithium battery will shorten its life.
I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one as I dare say we could go on all night.
Back to the original question, did a quick google and the general standard for discharge of a lithium battery is about 10% of its charge per month stored _________________ Ray
