I've just removed all POI related files from my MAP dir, while leaving POIEdit's config unchanged.
Hit the PoiEdit sync button and I had a fully sucessful sync - 28 POIs and their BMPs have all re-appeared in my map directory. GREAT! |

One way to know for sure is try to copy a large file from the SD card to the PC (one of the TTN2 database files is always a good choice)
If this fails it is a good sign of SD card probs
I don't think so because it works OK without this error until I undock and redock the iPAQ with POIEdit still open. Its a POIEdit/Activesync problem I believe. Anyway it does work now I appreciate the little nuances of POIEdit on my system. _________________ David |

To try to get to the bottom of this i started again and this time only syncd one poi - It would check every time and say that it was already up to date - fine. I then removed the iPAQ from the cradle and re-inserted it, checked with Activesync that I could still explore the SD Card - fine . tried to autoupdate and I get "Could not create remote file Storage Card\ blah bla..."
This is repeatable - could be a problem with Active synce 3.7?, IPAQ ROM 2.20. Windows 98SE.
I have now added in all of the POIs that I want to sync using the Auto Update Wizard and the syncs are going fine. I still get the above problem if I remove the iPAQ from the cradle while the POIedit application is still open. If I exit the POIEdit and restart it the all is OK again.

Thanks Dave, I found in an earlier thread the tip about the Lan settings auto detect - that was my problem here with the proxy message. My Internet link is via ADSL router so should be OK, the PocketGPS forums download quite quickly. I am trying the POIsync again just now, I didn't want to keep trying earlier just in case I was jamming up the server for others.
A few things with the POIEdit could be improved.
1. The title of the dialog when checking the files should not be "Updating" - perhaps comparing or something would be better.
2. If the download stalls then the Cancel button should have immediate effect, it doesn't.
Nope still getting stalls and after several minutes where Cancel has no effect I get "Could not retrieve http header blah blah"
The thing is it works faultlessly sometimes so it isn't a configuration problem here, rather some non robustness in the transfer protocol.

What POIEdit does is automatically downloads the POI and when it is doing this it's trying to save it directly to the Pocket PC through an ActiveSync connection. I've only tested this under ActiveSync 3.5 Build 12007 and it seems to work fine here. I don't know if anyone else has tested it under ActiveSync 3.7, it might be more of an issue with 3.7, or an issue with resources on your PC. When it says it cannot save the file, try opening ActiveSync and using the Explore option and browsing to your Storage Card. If you can't, this is the reason why. |

David, the error saying it "Could not create remote file" is when ActiveSync won't let it talk to the storage card. This sometimes happens because your ActiveSync connection has died, or sometimes if your low on resources, a restart like you did should fix it.
If you're not behind a firewall you only need to select the "Use Internet Explorer Settings". However bewarned, if you have Internet Explorer in Tools | Internet Options | Connections | Lan Settings to Auto Detect, then this will also cause this error. The server won't be overloaded as it's running off the same server as this, so if you can get to the website you'll be able to sync. I've just tried connecting using POIEdit and it's working fine for me here. We haven't had any other complaints of timeouts, so it might be down to your ISP |

Further: (WIN 98 SE) iPAQ 3870 Active Sync 3.7 USB connection.
Restart PC - run POIEdit - proxy settings problem again - go to tools/proxy settings and select manual (no proxy). Then auto update runs (but sometimes times out at one file or other, possibly server overload). I get a time out message (error 10060) this time rather than the "Could not create remote...." POIEdit then appeared to lock up completely Had to force quit and reboot PC. Try update again seems to get a bit further, though slows down and stalls on KFC.ov2. Cancel button has no immediate effect. Eventually get "Could not retrieve http header for http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/poisync/UK/KFC.poi" Close button worked, so try again, this time stalled at Bird_sanctuary.ov2.
What I wanted to check (if the sync had completed first time, was whether removing the iPAQ from the cradle and replacing it was the cause of the sync problem secondtime around).
I'm thinking the server is overloaded...
Despite having been unable to complete the sync, as an experiment after closing the update after a timeout, I undocked and redocked the iPAQ then tried the update and immediately get the "Could not create remote file blahblah " error dialog again. Activesync says I am connected OK however. Only recourse once this happens is to reboot the PC. _________________ David |

Further update, I restarted the PC and update appears to work now, though i still got the error message about auto proxy settings at the start and had to select manual again. _________________ David |

Thanks for the new service!
I just tried it here and to start with POIEditcomplained about proxy settings right from the start when it checks for updates to POIEdit itself.
I went to Tools:Proxy settings and chose Use Internet Explorer settings.
I eventually got it to sync for the first time and it certainly did load new POIs and overwrite old ones OK.
However, I thought I would try a second time by trying autoupdate
I now get " Could not create remote file Storage Card\Scotland Navigator Map\POCKETGPS_UK_SC.ov2"
Any ideas? Do I need to set manual proxy settings? I don't use a web proxy normally.
Edit: I have set manual proxy (none) and I can now check the version of POIEdit OK - but am still not able to autoupdate - perhaps the server is overloaded, I'll try again later. _________________ David |

One thing I should say just in case anyone thinks otherwise, our sync service (like every other sync service), is a download sync only service. If you modify POI's, you will need to send them in to us to include into the new sync service, this is mainly due to security reasons, if we allowed people to upload, then potentially hackers could get onto our server and trash it, so we choose only to offer a download service. |

To test things out, I selected several POI groups I didn't previously have installed.
A couple that I tried appear to be lacking .bmp files - and POIEdit complained about that (though only on the first sync).
The error is something like:
Cannot download "http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/poisync/UK/KFC.bmp" because of the following error:
Object not found
Please check your internet connection and Internet Explorer proxy settings (optionally you can set the proxy settings manually from the "Online | Proxy Settings" menu)
OK
I get the same error with Shell_Petrol_Stations.bmp
It looks like a bit of graphic design is needed for some of the POI groups - but that's nothing to do with the beta...
The other thing that fools me slightly is that POIEdit leaves the "Updating..." dialog open - though, again, that's really nothing to do with the beta, other than possibly an issue of documentation.

Rob, Thanks I forgot about that.
Dave, I agree with you, but corporates aren't always logical. But if they are really bothered then they'll complain and we'll create a 'different' logo

I was going to strip all copyrighted bitmaps from the POI's, but had a change of decision. We do have to watch regarding copyright issues, Ordnance Survey have been the biggest problem we've experienced. Technically the images or logos may be copyright of these companies, but I doubt that the relevant companies are going to complain about them being used, and re-thinking this we have to be pragmatic. I'm sure the companies won't mind, especially when it helps people locate their premises, so I've decided to leave/re-add these back in. If we do get any copyright issues coming out of this in the future then I may remove them, but we'll see how it goes. At the end of the day, we're helping people get there so they can spend money with those companies, so I doubt they'll mind too much. |
