Navman icn510 vs Tom Tom Go 300

After having my Navman icn 510 for about 8 months now I’ve found it very useful, and it’s got me out of trouble a few times. Yes there have been a few hick ups, but ways and means have got me through them and I have generally been pleased with the unit.
That was until I got my hands on a Tom Tom Go 300…
I’ve been testing this unit out for a week now and have been very surprised on how this fairs with the Navman.
The Go 300 was very user friendly with it’s menu system & more reliable for GPS signals, but what did surprised me the most was the Go 300 have much better coverage of the roads where I live & routes that I travelled. As for the Speed cameras I found this to be a doddle in loading in the Tom Tom compared to the Navman which does take some time.
My question is?
Are there going to be any new UK map upgrades for the Navman as I have counted at least 5 Major dual carriageways to be missing in my area. Where as the Go 300 have all of these roads.

Is the stability of the GPS going to improve?

And is there going to be an easier way to load in POI’s on the Navman system compared to the Tom Tom system.

I would like to point out that both units have the latest Software/Firmware versions on them.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

This question of GPS signal failure on 510's must be a unit related problem because I always get a signal from switching on using the power on/off button on the front of the unit within a couple of minutes (I've never shut the unit down using the power switch on the rear and if the unit sits in my draw for a couple of weeks the power setting always shows 100%). I've travelled in various countries and have only ever lost a signal in tunnels.

Can you name some roads which are on your GO300 that weren't on the 510?

Hi Tim,

list of roads then..

A130, A120, A13, A127, A140,,

these are all major dual carriageways and are missing parts of these roads that have been built over 2/3 years ago.

What i dont understand is how comes the TomTom Go 300 has these and the icn 510 does not.

well all i can say is that you've been lucky,
i have spoken to Navman and the Retail out let where i purchased who have tested the unit out to which both said there is no fault with the product.

well it does seem like Navman are falling behind with the rest of the competition thats out there. The Navman icn 520 is newer than the Go 300 and it uses the same maps as icn 510 (With the roads still missing) so thats no excuse.

i am using the maps that are 3.50 on my icn and the maps are different on the 510 and the 520

Do you know if the maps on the 520 are compatible with the 510?

The maps by themselves will not be compatible. You would have to buy the complete SmartST 2005 update. As yet, no release date has been announced, nor any upgrade pricing details.
