|
|
Im about to collect my first TomTom after using the indash SatNav in my wifes Laguna and gettin jealous that my car doesnt have one. The Carminat system in the Renault is pretty good, but it has an irritating habit of 'snapping' to the suggested route when you deviate from it, and asks you to do a U-Turn to return to it for *miles* before it accepts that you aint going that way and recalculates. Does the TomTom have the same flaw?
Carminat dont appear to have updated their maps for decades and the Laguna insists Im driving on fields in several locations - hopefully the TomTom maps are more current (although Ive read some Google posts that make me doubt that - anyone got any comments on this?).
Finally, Ive also spotted dozens of Ebay auctions for extended mapping thru Europe (Im only buying a Go3 so I dont get that as standard) plus John Cleese voices, etc, but more importantly Speed Camera updates, all for between 0.99 and 4.99. Im guessing these aint exactly kosher? Do I risk damaging my Go or invalidating my warranty or whatever using these downloads?
Thanks in advance |

The Go is very much more user-friendly in the sense that it will constantly update the route following the rules you have selected (e.g fastest route, shortest route etc).
So if you deviate from the planned route the Go will calculate an alternative route. If it is faster, shorter etc to turn round it will tell you to do so until it finds an alternative route that fits the rules.
Buying maps from E-Bay is dodgy in as much as you need to register maps with your product code. If you buy a second hand (or copied) map it will already have been registered with someone elses Go so you could easily waste your money. |

Hi theminor,
to the forum!
It depends on the route that you’re on, but TomTom will not normally instruct you to make a U-turn for too long before it will recalculate the new route.
No SatNav package will be 100% accurate, it depends on the mapping companies like TeleAtlas and Navteq. TomTom use Tele Atlas. At the moment the TomTom maps aren’t too bad.
Please, please, please do not buy the speed camera databases from eBay. The camera database will most likely be a rip-off of the FREE PocketGPSWorld camera database, which has just been updated.
The other stuff like the John Cleese voice and the additional maps all need activation. It’s best to buy them legitimately so that you get the correct activation process!
If you’re jealous of you wife’s SatNav system in her car then wait until you get the TomTom, as she’ll want one too! ;)

Thank you guys for the welcome and advice. Being a TT virgin (stop sniggering at the back) Im a bit in the dark about how to use the PGPSWorld speedcam update but I've no doubt I'll spend many an hour tomorrow night figuring it all out and issuing random profanities when it doesnt work. Another question tho - will the speedcam update fit alongside the standard data on the supplied SD card, or do I need to invest in a new card before I can delight to Ozzy Ozbourne pointing out what a moron I am for missing the last turning?
I wonder if I qualify for the oldest car to have a TT in as well? As the username implies, I've a 1967 Morris Minor that'll be the proud recipient of the TT and it'll also serve duty in my 1961 Mini van. Unfortunately both of them are going to need to have a fag lighter socket installed to run it first! I think the Mini dynamo might need uprating a bit too...

Nice forum, by the way, guys and well done. I use the same base software at my own site www.TheMinorSite.co.uk but have customised it a bit! |

Hi theminor,
There are some guides that should be read (in the following order):
The beginner’s guide to the PocketGPSWorld camera database.
This explains about the different camera types and about categories and subcategories, so that you can decide how you want the database on your unit.
Depending on whether you have TomTom Navigator on a Pocket PC or TomTom GO, please read either:
How to install (camera database) POIs to TomTom Navigator 5.
This guide explains how to load the PocketGPSWorld camera database onto a Pocket PC running TomTom Navigator 5.
How to install (camera database) POIs onto a TomTom GO.
This guide explains how to load the PocketGPSWorld camera database onto your TomTom GO.
The above guides may look lengthy and complicated when first seen. However if you grab a cup of coffee and read each one thoroughly then they should make sense as they have been written in a step-by-step way, for ease of reading.

"Unfortunately both of them are going to need to have a fag lighter socket installed to run it first! I think the Mini dynamo might need uprating a bit too... " Do make sure of the correct polarity on these motors, dynamo's were usually "POSITIVE" earth not "NEGATIVE" earth. |

One thing is sure "theminor" is that you will not have the Athermic windscreen problem.

I travel across a bypass under construction which is marked on TomTom maps - but then I go along another bypass which has been open 6 months (and was nearly opened 10 months before that) before TomTom released 300 - which isn't _________________ J. |

Theyve both been converted already, but thanks for the advice. The picture didnt come thru first time for some reason, but if I can get it right this time you'll see just why the Mini has had this done!
