|
|
Can anyone explain the reason for the price difference between this fixed Brodit mount at £53.99
http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=963
And this one with a cigar lighter plug at £33.99
http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=931
I would have assumed that the only difference is the fitment of a cigar lighter plug? I want to do a permanent install, but am tempted to buy the cigar lighter mount and just cut off the plug and wire it in?
Thanks

The permanent install model has the 12v - 5v reduction circuitry in a module half way along the power lead, the other contains this in the cigarette lighter plug.
If you simply remove the cigarette lighter plug you'll end up frying your PPC as it'll be receiving 12v not 5v
See Brodit #978606 and Brodit #968606. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks Darren,
Definitely not something to find out the hard way I presume the same is true of the equivalent amplified mounts.
It sounds like a pain having the converter in the cable though - I was planning in making a small (cable sized) hole through a hidden part of my dash - presumably the only way I can do this is to cut the cable between converter and mount, then remake it with the join behind the dash - assuming the cable is not detachable from the mount, and the converter is not too close to the mount to let me do this?
Cheers

It is a pain for such an install I agree, the simplest way would be to unsolder wth wire where it attaches to the sync plug at the base of the cradle, the connector is accesible by undoing two screws and the solder pads are on a PCB and large and easily worked on.
You could then feed the wire through the hole in the dash and re-solder. Simple enough. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks again Darren,
Sounds straightforward enough - I wasn't sure if the cable connection at the mount end could be dismantled as you have described or was a sealed item.
One last question - I assume the same is true of the amplified mount?
Cheers

There is also the possibility of wiring in an additional socket in a more convenient place. |

Thanks Neil,
I did think about adding a new socket, but managed to drill a hole through the dash hidden by the curvature of the join between two panels, which ahs worked out quite neat.
Cheers
