What PPC software allows you to plan your route on a PC 1st?

Besides Garmin.

I like the Garmin way that I can lay out a route on my PC, make sure I know exactly which turns I'm making, look at them on a large monitor and use a mouse to drag my route around before uploading it to the sat nav unit. However, it seems that most of the non-Garmin software doesn't allow this.

I've used the comparison database checklist here, but I'm not sure that the closest options are even what I'm looking for. I add "Ability to plan route offline (Route Planning)" and "Ability to use product without GPS (General)" and "Ability to test drive/demo route (Route Planning)" to the list but none are exactly what I'm asking about, and since the database is dated, I'm not sure if it's answering my question or not.

So, can anybody tell me? Are there pieces of software that work like Garmin's MapSource but will upload routes to a pocketPC that's using a non-garmin GPS unit?

CoPilot Live V5 installs onto the PC as well as the PPC. You can plan routes/trips on the Desktop PC, save them and transfer the saved trip to the PPC and navigate using that trip.

How ever I would suggest that you read through the CoPilot forums first before deciding, as they are some problems with it.

Thanks. It sounds like Navigon version 4 (maybe?) used to allow this as well. I read some comments about version 5 that seemed to lament the passing of that function. This is what was written about the changes from v4 to v5:

It's just tough to tell. All theinfo on the websites (when there is any at all) seems to focus on the PPC end of things. I guess this makes sense because that's where 99% of the use is going to be, but I can't believe that I'm the only one interested in whether or not you can route on a PC.

I'll take a look at CoPilot forums.

I use CoPilot V5 occasionally, and when I do I pre-plan the route on the desktop first add waypoints as required to get the best route, save it and copy to the PPC.
One of the problems with CP 5 is that the routing leaves a lot to be desired. Ok if you want to travel via Motorways and Duel Carriage ways, not to good at doing shortest routes as is prone to be biased to major roads, hence the need to add waypoints to correct, and not so easy to do on the PPC when away from the Desktop.

Even Garmin Mapsource doesn't allow routes generated on the PC to be transferred to the PPC. Sad

Please note that you will not be able to download routes to any of the Garmin GPSs using the Que software.


A bit sad, this, as it is a great feature of my GPS V. Why it couldn't be implemented for Que software I do not know.

Wow, I did not know that. I've worked with the MapSource software and since it lets you upload routes to dedicated Garmin units, it only seemed natural that it would work the same way with the Que software.

Does it let you upload waypoints/vias? At least that way you could force the Que software to route you on a certain path.

No, I didn't know until I bought it, either. Like you, I'd made the assumption that it would be able to transfer routes to the device. Yes, you can transfer waypoints, though.

Well, that may be the closest I can get unless I go with CoPilot.

Do ANY of these other PDA softwares (besides CoPilot) have any on-PC-mapping functions at all?

I just got a new Axim and tried out Navigon 5 and it, clearly, has no PC aspects at all. Doing any extensive detail-oriented loung-route work on the PDA screen seems unbelievably inefficient.

Alturion lets you work in this way.

It will generate a pre-calculated corridor consisting of your desired route, and you can download that one into your PDA. Great if you're stuck with little memory, and do not have any need for "roaming".

Thanks! I just hopped over tho their website and saw that their checklist includes "Create routes on your desktop" and even "Print routes with the desktop application " (in the pro version) so it looks like it's more geared towards the way I'd like to use the software.

Okay, now I'm off to find out more about it. You know, things like: that it's prohibitively expensive, has terrible maps or something else that'll make it not right for me Smile
