PocketGPSWorld.com has done it again! This time, the CoPilot Live | Pocket PC 5 North American Review! This review extends on and compliments the existing European Review to give North American readers more information regarding the differences and routing.
ALK really have out done themselves with CoPilot 5! CoPilot 5 is a superb product, a pleasure to use and will definitely get you from A to B with the least amount of hassle using CoPilot's Traffic feature! Coupled with the new features included in CoPilot 5 and the latest 2004 maps, this really does make CoPilot 5 an application to reckon with!
CoPilot Live 5 offers a whole host of new features including 3D Maps, Night Mode, New GUI, Updated 2004 Maps, Landscape mode support and much more!

Is this software strictly for Pocket PCs or can it be used on a laptop mounted in the vehicle? |

Hi,
Thank you for the opportunity to voice my take on this up front.
I am a North American So CAL return customer from the mid nineties, I see that nothing has changed in terms of terrible maps same GUI, horrid GPS warm up “different areas”.
I would NOT say any of this unless I had other software and alternate GPS.
The area I live in is visited by Millions a year due to its climate, with LOTS of RV Parks, over 100 Golf Courses within 45 SQ MILES.
My house is on the map for over three years zoned, nowhere in CPL5 found.
The MAIN highway HWY 111 is declared as CA-111 and gets this, it is not even showing up in manual address point, despite showing on the map.
I have to constantly be in the field, so I would have allowed to go by cross intersection but as said the LACK of getting the main HWY 111 “25 + Miles long all bridges off this Main, makes this totally useless, this HWY has been mapped for over 20 years !!
ALL attempts to get this answered, I even offered to supply info while driving, have been unanswered, my request for refund unanswered.
The map rendering is stalling at times despite a 624 MHZ PDA “brand-new and works fine with others” Gig of storage no problems otherwise.
So, I vehemently have to disagree with the current implementation of this software, the lack of correct identified DECADES existing Highway, far too long acquisition times of the BT GPS.
I am in the field of recommending wireless solutions to clients; I can get a far superior working solution put together for 150 dollars less than the total price on this MSRP.
The GUI is still the same as it was in the nineties on the desktop; the Voice is truly below acceptable standard in clarity and volume.
I cannot imagine this to be working for anybody having seen the difference compared to others.
This is a definite Thumbs down in
USABILTY
SUPPORT
MAPPING
This is the essence of it all. I expect a full free upgrade to complete new version with all those issues addressed in order to give this a consideration, at this point, it collects dust.
I wished I would have read the user feedback instead of the reviews by PRO’s.
I hope this in the correct thread if not please move it but don’t delete it, so ALK can see that all is NOT well and an improvement is needed desperately in their software.
Regards |

Now what would you recommend instead? And please don't say Pharos or Teletype... 8)
We can certainly help you with the refund if you wish. _________________ Lutz

Yes, take them up on their helpful offer for a refund. I used CoPilot for 4 months before giving up with it in complete frustration. Luckily, my retailer was very helpful in arranging a refund.
I'm now using TomTom, and while it's not perfect, it is 200% better than CoPilot.
I can write a review of CoPilot in 5 words; "Piece of Junk - Don't Buy"
Cheers

Yep without a doubt this prog SUX :x ! The maps are not anywhere near 2004 as advertised and no updates on their site! Some streets in my town (Fresno, CA) have been around for 5-7 years and a major K6-12 school complex that has been in place for 7-10 years including the streets surrounding are not included. Go with Mapopolis you can DL the program and demo maps for a 9 day trial period. I have to ask what good is the best routing software or latest GUI without decent updated maps? None IMHO.

Sorry, have been away on holidays, with little to no internet connection. Give me your purchase details and I'll see what I can do (ignoring your attitude for a second) _________________ Lutz

That's the beauty of the surveying process - you never know where it will hit. For the record - the CoPilot maps in the Houston, TX area are superior to both NavTeq and TeleAtlas, probably because the ALK surveying team has been here two years ago, while the other ones don't seem to bother.
Map accuracy is always a local discussion item... _________________ Lutz

In all screenshots I do not see the names of the streets on the maps of copilot. WHY?
Does that mean I cannot use co=pilot as a paper map replacement? I have been using my Destinator 2 for years now in that respect. It works fine!

The 3D view does not show street names. The 2D view does but you need to be zoomed in sufficiently for that. _________________ Lutz
