|
|
Following the many (often heated) discussions on here about whether or not TT5 is good or bad, can we start some sort of poll to see what the true ratio of good to bad experiences are with TT5.
A simple answer of "Good" or "Bad" will suffice along with whether you think it is better or worse than TT3.
I think this is the only way to see the true extent of any problem, and to prove or disprove if it is accurate to say that only people with problems tend to vent their feelings!
I'll start it off with GOOD! Better than TT3. |

I'll answer for Tomtom. They think it's dodgy.
I know that, because they sent me an email to apologise for the problems, and to let me know that an "Upgrade" will be out soon and that I should watch their website for further news.
For "Upgrade" read bug fix.
You think it's great but Tomtom think it needs fixing. Funny old world isn't it?
I would say that pretty much obviates the need to have a poll doesn't it?

My only previous experience is with TT4.4 - I like the new features in TT5 such as itineraries, routing to POIs near a planned route and the avoid part of route - but these all seem a bit under developed. Itineraries seem primative in their planning - I have had some results that are ludicrous. Avoid part of route is a bit dumn becasue you can't chose what to avoid as often it will take you there anyway Wimbledon to Enfield avoiding London takes you through the middle of the city for example.
But TT5 breaks some things that worked in TT4, so for example, I cannot sisplay POIs withotu TT5 failing to display my position properly. TT4 did that and TT5 dores not. There for a big bad for adding features and breaking things that worked OK. |

Overall, I'm pretty happy with TomTom Nav 5 so far. But it's my first Navigation product of any kind so I don't have a good point of reference.
Having used it for just over a week, I've already found three map errors in various parts of San Diego County (California). Two of them were minor but one of them was significant enough that I would have never been able to find the house without calling the owners. With that later one, Navigator 5 wanted to take me two blocks further north and then approach on the parallel street heading south. Only problem... that parallel street dead ended one block before the input destination. TomTom's map clearly showed that it was a dead end but it attempted to route me that way anyway.
If TomTom does do an upgrade, I sure hope they put back the ability to Navigate to a set of coordinates.

TT5 GUI is great but there are too many problemes with it (specially compared with TT3)
Example:
- The program is extremely sluggish - sometimes what's shown on the sceen is 2 to 3 seconds late - specially if you have a lot of turns or if you're on round abouts - and this is not because of lack of memory or PDA processor speed!
- There are sooooo many map errors - at least in the Portuguese maps!
- The route recalc is way too slow - in some cases it taken 15 sec - you can go a long way in 15 sec!!!
- The ETA and sometime routes that is planned are completely wrong (as you can not program your own speeds on the various types of roads this occurs)
- way too many times the system "throws" you a few hundred meters off the roads;
- TT5 reduces your battery life like you would not believe
- My navigator screen every once in a while "shake" for a fraction of a second.
To sum things up - I'm dispaointed!!! |

On the whole good, although I have experienced some of the problems mentioned on the bug list. Disapointed with the maps though, they look no different to the ones that came with the previous version of TT mobile.
Like any software it will have problems with the initial version - didn't this happen with V3 too? |

Now I'm getting my head around the menu structure it's no too bad.
Yes there are some bugs, but how many of us are using software
versions that don't have patches ??
I wouldn't have gone for the upgrade if it wasn't for the Europe maps.
Can't help but think that's what TT were banking on.
Don't think it's bad enough to downgrade though.
Just hope V5.1 isn't tooooo far away?
Q for TT ........... are we there yet ? 8)
