Or you can exchange a 2.5 GB microdrive against a 6 GB one http://www.preisroboter.de/ergebnis751544.html and place "All Europe" + "All Northern America" + Australia + the comming "eastern Europe" there to be prepared for the next world-trip. |

The thing is, if you go to TomTom's website and change the country version to English US or Australian, you'll see that they're offering the 700 in the US too (but not Oz).
But, when you add up the memory size of the map data, it is far less than the size of the hard drive. I know the app is on there too, but could this mean that the 700 gets shipped with all map data on it, but just unlocked for the relevant region?
Alternatively, if it's possible for the 700 to be seen as a removable device by a PC, couldn't you buy the map data for another region, and transfer it across?
Apologies if this has completely lowered the level of this thread - but thought I'd post anyway ;-) |

hello,
I just received yesterday my GO 700 (Europe version) : the space occupied by the maps and all the system files is about 1.5 Gb , leaving about 1 Gb free, certainly enough to install some US maps...

thanks for the info Jack
I suppose if I were to get a 500 and a 4GB SD card then it would hold the whole of Europe and the USA - would it all fit on a 4gb?
thanks

So far, the USA maps are not available, so this talk is all very theoretical.
If and when they do become available, you will find that the Major Roads map is suprisingly detailed (200 and some mb). This plus a regional or state map should do nicely. Heavens, who would need the entire country at street level. |

Not strictly true. Take a look at this section of /etc/rc - just before the main loop:
Code: |
# determine partition list, should really look at /proc/partitions but
# i don't have the time now
if test "$hw_sdcard" -eq "1"; then
part="$part sdcard0 sdcard0p1 sdcard0p2 sdcard0p3 sdcard0p4"
fi
if test "$hw_harddisk" -eq "1"; then
part="$part hda hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4 hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8"
mntopt="rw,exec,noatime,nodev,nosuid"
fi
|
At this point you should be able to get away with changing the partition list by doing something like
Code: |
if test "$hw_usbharddisk" -eq "1"; then
part="$part sda sda1 sda2 sda3 sda4 sda5 sda6 sda7 sda8"
mntopt="rw,exec,noatime,nodev,nosuid"
fi
|
you'd need to define the value of $hw_usbharddisk as 1 when the usb disk was present. You could also perphaps simply add a partition line after the iffs for easy testing/rollback.
What you end up doing is pretend that your external drive is the SD card so the application gets everything of the external HDD.
Actually, what I'd do is test that your USB driver loaded if it did then use the external hdd, otherwise use the SD card. in either situation the mount point /mnt/sdcard is used, so the application is none the wiser.
