Hi all,
Is tomtom mobile 5 as good as buying a seperate gps hardware unit?
What's the quality, accuracy and useability like?
Thanks

Hi Simon
I've used both TomTom Navigator 5 and TTM 5.
The biggest problem in my mind is that the screen on the smartphone (I have C500) is small and is a pain to see the detail. The screen on a seperate system is likely to be big enough and clear enough to read in an instant when your in the car. I do miss that with my XDA.
Where I think TTM beats a dedicated system like the TomTom Go is that you carry your phone anyway so its one less gizmo to carry around. I hated to each time I park up, unhook the PDA to avoid prying eyes and either lock it away or have another gadget to lug around. If you leave a TT Go, I bet it won't be long before someone "liberates" it for you!
I think that the Quality, accuarcy and usability is all fantastic with TTM5 and I actually prefer it to TTN5.
Hope that helps |

Many thanks,
I'm thinking of buying a nokia 7710 so this should get over the problem of a small screen...
I think I'll go with the TTM5
cheers

Dont forget reducing the amount displayed on the screen in the options actually makes the font bigger and easier to read. I only have miles left and time when reached destination on the screen, the font automatically becomes bigger and easier to read. Cool. _________________ Audi S4

I find that useful as my car speedo appears reads 5 mph above the actual speed. I imagine my gps unit is more accurate than the speedo. So I can now go 5 mph faster without breaking the speed limit. 8) _________________ Nokia 6600 running TT Mobile 5.0 |

Just tried a few different combinations in demo mode and text only seems to get bigger if you have two or less options switched on, not counting the street name. The street name size also increases when you have two or less as well.
I'm not sure I could managed with just two of them though. I suppose I could manage without speed and just have ETA and remaining distance. _________________ Nokia 6600 running TT Mobile 5.0 |

Can anyone say how good TTM5 is when choosing the cycle option?
Does it use dedicated cycle paths or just navigate you on existing roads? |

"I've used both TomTom Navigator 5 and TTM 5. "
Whats the difference?
I just got today "tomtom Navigator 5 for PDA"
So don't know which of the two that is....but anyway I just dropped the SD card into my XDA, powered up the little GPS box and off we went. put in the full 7 postcode of my local pub and it was faultless.
Love it.
Only gripe being the map is out of date...sack the map provider Tom and get someone who can provide more up-to-date maps! _________________ GPS gets me home after a skinfull. |

Just tried it, looks like it just uses the more minor road and skips all motorways. It also gives an estimated journey time by bike.
Just tried a walking route. Apparently I would take me 15:58 hrs to walk to Blackpool which is 49.6 miles away. _________________ Nokia 6600 running TT Mobile 5.0 |

What I mean is that TomTom Navigator 5 is the version you are using on your XDA. TTM5 is what I am using on my smartphone (C500).
Your lucky you haven't found any problems yet. Plenty of people here having loads of problems with the new version. I've had a few but nothing too bad. |

I have found several problems with Mobile 5 on a Nokia 6600.
1. Navigating to a postcode is hard because it does a search as you enter the postcode and often misses characters when you cycle through the letters on the phones keypad thus giving the wrong postcode. There is no need for a search as you type with postcodes.
2. I synchronise my phone's contacts with Outlook using the Nokia 6600 PC Suite. After doing this the TomTom navigation from a contact does not work properly - it finds a place several miles away even though the phone contact shows the correct information. If the contact is entered on the phone, everything is OK. Mobile 5 doesn't seem to like contacts transfered with PC suite.
3. You can't capitalise the first letter of the second word of a favourite. |
