I am fed up with my original TT receiver taking too long to get a fix. Anyone recommend an all singing and dancing new one? Is the new TT receiver the best? TTM5 doesnt restrict you to receivers like TTM4 does it?

Hey,
It's saying the new TomTom GPS unit is only 12 channels, I thought the new one was meant to use the new chipset with 20 channels all-in-view tracking? Real shame if they haven't used the latest technology.
I have a GlobalSat BT-338 receiver which averages about the same price from various web sites, with 20 channels to track it's accurate & has fast pickup times to.

Hey,
Yeah, in the past I'd read direct from TomTom it's 20 channels.
But the previous link says 12. Hopefully it's a typing mistake.

gstenson, did you get the gps receiver and have you found an improvement?
I'm considering this one myself so would be glad to hear how you got on.

Yes got one. Must admit it is slightly quicker to get a lock although still takes a long time in my mind (about 1-3 mins). Having said that it is much nicer to look at, has an auto shutdown when there is no BT activity and the battery lasts twice as long. _________________ Audi S4

Also worth considering the new Fortuna Slim with SiRF Star III, a great little device, it's Fortuna's equivalent to the 338!

Don't know for sure whether TTM5 ties you to there receiver like the previous version, but as they only officially sell it with their receiver I wouldn't be suprised! _________________ owen.haigh@yoonoo.co.uk

Dont think TT do anymore as there is online activation. This BT adapter looks OK but is quite big and doesnt have as good battery life. _________________ Audi S4

Is there any way to disable the shutdown? It's very useful when I'm out of the car but I'm wanting to put the BT unit in the car in a not so easy to get to place, therefore I won't be able to dig it out to push the button every time I set off. |

Have just bought the TomTom GPS MkII it is twenty channels as described it also has some additions to the CPU that help GPS finds in city centres.
I can tell you I am very pleased with it. It will even find a fix in my house near a windo which is astounding I previously had an altina which was prety quick but would not work with tomtom mobile.
My only critisim with the new Mk II Gps is a small one you have to buy a mains charger and the magnetic dash mount as extras. Both of these items are necessary and although the unit comes with the car charger I would prefer to have paid a little extra nad had a mains and magnetic mount.
But I am very pleased with it so its worth the cost . |

I ordered from supertrader yesterday and they're out of stock now, everywhere else seems to be £20 more. ANyone seen an alternative cheap supplier for this unit? |

go for the fortuna slim-line, it comes with the extras mentioned above, and uses a nokia style battery. |
