FRENCH SPEED CAMERA DATABASE
How to get the most up-to-date version of this database.
Well, it's that time of year again when people head off on their holidays. If you are travelling to or through France this year, you may want to protect yourself with the French speed camera database.
This database is freely available in a .ZIP file from GPSPassion.
Parlez-vous Francais? Non? No worries! Just follow the instructions below for an easy-to-follow guide to obtaining this information.
NB: You must be registered on and signed into the GPSPassion forum to download the speed camera database.
Follow the link below which will take you to the forum page containing all of the speed camera POI-related topics.
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/default.asp?CAT_ID=14
If you want the standard version of the database, look at the second pink folder down from the top (the one which says "Version Standard." Do not click on the folder as you do not need to enter that forum yet.
Just underneath the pink folder icon, you should see some green text in bold font. This gives the dates of the last few issues of the database, the most recent one being Mai 2005 (May 2005) at the time of writing. Click on the word "Lien" next to the most recent date available.
A new browser window should open and you will be taken to a thread within the Speed Camera Database forum. Do not be daunted by all those accents - just look for the phrase: "Télécharger la version standard - ici." This means: "Download the standard version - here." Click on the word "ici" as this should be a link to another page.
Again, a new browser window should open and this time you will see a login screen if you are not already logged into the forum. Log in with your username and password and you will be taken to the download page.
You now have two options. You can either download the .ov2 version of the database if you are using TomTom Navigator with CheckPOInt software, or the .asc version of the database for use with POIWarner and Navigon systems.
You can also download the Radars Fixes (fixed cameras) and Radars Mobiles (mobile cameras) separately if you wish. The traffic light camera database is included in the Radars Mobile folder. To download each database, click on the word "Lien" next to each option.
Save the .ZIP file to your computer and unzip the files using a program such as WinZip (freely available from the internet.)
Each zipped file contains the following files: an .ov2 file (or an .asc file, depending on which version you have downloaded) (containing the data), a .bmp file (this is the icon that you see on your screen) and a Read Me file called "lisezmoi_28s."
The PLUS Version of the French Speed Camera Database.
To be able to download the PLUS version of the French speed camera database, you need to either have made a contribution to the database or be a member of Club GPSPassion.
For more information on this, please see this thread (in French): http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19894

Hi
Although I am registered for the UK version of this Forum and am able to Log In, I cannot log in to the French version using the UK ID. It appears that the French version has been closed for registrations. I therefore cannot download the camera database.
I assume this will be the same for anyone not already registered for the French Forum.
Is there any way we can get to register or get the OV2 files if we have not already registered.
Can anyone email them to me !
Regards Rinkrat |

Hi,
I cannot seem to get onto the French forums at the moment. What message are you getting when you try to register?

If I try to log in using my current Uk site log in to Gps PasSion, (works on UK site ) I get
Your username and/or password were incorrect.
Please either try again or register for an account
On french forum !
Wasnt sure whether I needed seperate registration for French site ?
But on trying to find a reg link under FAQs it says
The Administrator has turned off Registration for this forum. Only registered members are able to log in.
So a bit confused !

You are right - I eventually managed to get onto the French site and tried to register. It came up with the message:
Sorry, but we are not currently accepting new members.
I have the files (the most recent update - May 2005) stored on my PC and have been getting quite a lot of requests from people asking me to email the files to them. The main reason I created this guide was to stop this from happening.
Rinkrat, I will email them to you now...

I don't know for sure, as I think that when I registered, I registered on the French website. I would have thought that it would be the same username for both sites, but perhaps someone else can shed some more light on this?

Hi xda,
Thanks for the suggestion. It certainly would solve my email problem.
Speaking as a Moderator, however, I don't think it would be such a good idea. A lot of websites don't like other sites hosting their files without their express permission, and without asking GPSPassion, I would not want to suggest doing this.
I am unsure as to whether GPSPassion are no longer accepting new members or whether this is just a temporary thing, but when I have time I may post on their forum and ask what is going on.
Regards,

My pleasure, converted all 3 of the .OV2 files to Autoroute's .CSV format and installed them into Autoroute and they seem to cover the whole of France. _________________ Graham.
