Does anybody think it is worth trying to get a sticky thread made that has a definitive list of problems with TomTom Navigator 5 so that this can then be passed on to TomTom to deal with it?

I am not going to rant about this here as I have done enough of that in other threads but I think it is about time that these issues were sorted or at least higlighted better to TomTom.

Cheers

I think this has merit - ignore changed/missing features and map items.

PDA Dell x50v (and other VGA ppcs?) lock up on exit for upto 5 (or more minutes).

"No GPS GPS Device" message when it should say "no GPS fix".

Lack of clarity on safety screen - ie showing an exit when you have (say) 30 miles to travel down a moroway.

why does it change the battery power settings - I have my settings to dim screen after 30 seconds when on battery tomtom changes these to 15 minutes - and also I have unticked the box when on ac paower and tomtom ticks this box. This for me is the MAJOR problem as NO OTHER PROGRAM I have installed mucks around with settings like this (and doesn't return them to the default when exited)

Thats my major gripes with its operation (at the moment)

I'll add another -

tomtom 5 appears to stop my dell charging - I thought it was the car charger but looking at other threads tomtom looks to be screwing with something else again.

These are my contributions -

Things that worked with TT4 but now are broken -

1) Serious speed issues – 3D view is much, much slower than TT4 – often four or five seconds behind – must be a TT5 issue as TT4 ran perfectly well. Problems are far worse on complex junctions, for example, involving two roundabouts close together – TT5 sometimes seems to get completely confused as to where I am even though the satellite fix is at full strength or to just give up displaying updated positions. I have not had the chance ot check whether disabling POIs helps.

2) Voice directions are confusing – TT4 was very good, but TT5 often says things like “turn left – then turn right” when the right turn is hundreds of metres away – this is confusing and leaves one unsure where one is meant to turn – especially as, with my previous comment – the position shown is often well away from where you actually are. TT4 only ever gave similar instructions when turns immediately followed one another.

3) Predicted arrival times in TT4 were nearly always spot on and updated well as the journey went on. TT5 seems to only rarely change the original arrival time. This morning, I was predicted to take 1:28 to get to my destination. Due to it being early on a Sunday morning I made good time, but when a mile away from my destination your software still predicted I would not arrive for fourteen minutes. On what basis did it estimate I would only travel the final section at a walking pace?

I've found that TTN5 seems to be more power hungry.

In a normal day my 2210 IPaq would lose around 40%, 2-3 hours.

Today with same useage it lost around 75%!

Why can't I have small 32mb maps in TTN5? I have no need for the whole 200meg UK map!

TT4 had Germany and France split into chunks which were about 60 - 80MB IIRC. I used them a lot as it made no sense driving arround with tons of map I would not use slowing down searches etc.

To add to your list Skids:

1. All the map errors of TTN3 still in TTN5 (apart from the M6 Toll road is now shown i.e. wasn't on my version of TTN3) Evil or Very Mad
2. Maps appear to be identical to TomTom Go Maps (My farther in-law has this and I ran them side by side today, no diff - same errors) Twisted Evil
3. TTN5 won't allow access to the 'Start' button or menu/alert pop-overs Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
4. You have to quit TTN5 to launch another app all unless it's has a direct access button, but even then TTN5 often suppresses it
5. 3D Map goes mental in the motorway when you get near a complex junction, i.e. the picture jumps and seems to lose your GPS Fix, once you've past the junction - goes back to normal
6. TTN5 seems to lag behind your actual position on the road? Confused
7. The POI warning is rubbish; I want to set warning in units of time not yards/meters. Without this if your going a bit fast :-) you get very short notice of a speed trap, and too much if your slow.. They need to take a leaf out of CheckPOInt 3.2's book! Sad
8. CheckPOInt 3.2 isn't compatible with TTN5 - Big problem if your a high mile'r
9. TomTom charge 65Euros for Speedcam POIs ... CheckPOInt is free and you can add new on the fly.. wake up TomTom! Evil or Very Mad
10. The POI warning system is so poor you have to go into each POI and set it's parameters which then quits you back to the map, you have to his settings and start again for each one you have.. CheckPOInt you can set settings for a selection of POIs in one hit.
11. Think this was mentioned before, but you can't set your own speed preferences, so TTN5 gets your ETA all wrong all the time.
12. TTN5 takes between 30-40 seconds to launch, TTN3 was up in around 7 seconds (HP Hx2410, Navigator S/W in Main Memory, maps on a 60x corsair 1GB SD Card)
13. TTN5 adds 'Bluetooth' support to your iPaq... Why, it works fine without on TTN3.. Have since deleted this :-)
14. TTN5 automatically switches off your Bluetooth module on you iPaq when you quit TTN5, Why.. I still want it active .. I use Bluetooth for other stuff as well as TTN5 you know! Still does this after deleting 'Bluetooth' support!
15. Batt power is rubbish now I've installed TTN5 .. What have they done to my iPaq? Goes from 100% to 77% in around 15 mins .. never did that before.
16. All these problems have been reported to TomTom Support.. No response in 5 days ?

I think that's enough from me here, but as you can imagine from this list, I've reverted to TTN3 for the time being. If none of this gets fixed, then I'll be looking for a refund!

Regards

Jay

I have a clean install of TT5 running on my iPAQ4150. Sometimes when I click on the TomTom icon on the Today screen it goes into TomTom other times nothing happens (including no red hands at the bottom of the screen).

The only way I can get it to run is to use the pen to reset the machine.

Is anyone else getting this?

Thanks
Dean

1. tomtom5 uses 100% pda resources, so nothing runs properly in the background.
2. Inability to setup/map hardware buttons.
3. Inability to get to start menu/today screen without exiting app (without much messing about)
4. display info in portrait mode is poor, seems to prefer landscape.
5. Issues if app & maps are stored in differant location (ie postcode error)
6. Changing settings with the bluetooth / power / screen config of the PDA.

To me this product is really looking like it was purely designed for a Tomtom GO (which would have none of the options mentioned above) and then ported the software to a PDA, rather than designed specifically for PDA's, and then trying to fix the issues (unsuccessfully). I was expecting only the common engine to be used rather than the whole application / interface.
Ah well, tomtom informed me to keep an eye out for patches, and a link to officially complain/refund etc.
I'm back on v3.07 for now.

- Installer bug which means full postcode support is unavailable unless you manually create an empty 'Tomtom' folder at the top level of your storage card - it doesn't see the 'zip' data otherwise.

- On VGA units, with the 2D Navigator map view, the map is zoomed out much too far to be readable while driving. Manual zoom setting helps but gets overridden and forgotten after a few seconds. (3D view is fine, but I find 2D much clearer).
