TomTom runs using a GPRS connection, however would anyone prefer that TomTom used a RDS/FM reception of TMC (maybe support both methods of reception)

Alternativly would it not be possible for a third party to create this functionality, by creating a plugin for TomTom to receive the RDS TMC data and present it to TomTom application?

I understand that TomTom recieves it data from a "internet" connection, hence can be updated via a cradle on a desktop PC. Is it not therefore possible for a small application to collect the TMC data from the FM signal and create a "virtual" traffic server on the PDA from which TomTom collects the traffic data.

If I understand correctly the protocol used by a GPS/TMC mouse is slighly different, so it may be nessesary to collect the GPS/TMC data and the pass the GPS data to TT in the basic NMEA format.

I am aware that should this be possible, the use of the data from TMC would require payment of a licence fee to iTIS, however other systems (i.e inbuilt, navigon etc) are subject to this constraint.

For me, the ability for TT for receive traffic via RDS would be the "killer" app (either as a third party plugin or part of TT itself), as I am limited with the use of GPRS by my network.

I do run Navigon MN4 (very sucessfully) and would be happy to stick to Navigon (even though I prefer TT by a large margin), but it has been discovered the MN5 does not support TMC in the UK (even though the Navigon website lists it!).

In "theory" it should be too difficult to acheive to collect via TMC mouse, and create a "virtual" tomtom server to pass the info into TomTom. I guess that the biggest issue is the licensing with iTIS, and therefore probably easier to TT to implement (but they wont! as they are committed to GPRS connectivity)
