Hi and thanks for reading.
I have just purchased a cheap copy of the Mapsonic 1.3 software and am having real problems with the maps. I have a Tungsten E with 512 mb SD card.
Firstly I copied the whole of GB & I to my 512mb SD card, which took hours, only to find that I got ERROR - Not enough memory.
How can I get the uk main roads on to the SD card so they can be viewed? Does anyone know how much of the uk can be inserted into a map and still be viewed on th palm.
If you cut up the uk to small map chunks how do you plot routes across the chunks?
Can you have main uk roads in one map and detailed maps seperatly?
Also, does anyone know of a gps receiver which can be purchased for ues with the T/E?
Thanks for your hepl |

My England and Wales map from 1.3 came to about 225 mb, with Scotland being another 112 mb. I don't see why you can't get the whole of the UK on a 512mb card.
When you say that you had a memory error was it the Palm not having enough memory or the card?
If the Palm, then you need to ensure that you have about 8mb free for the route to be executed.
If the card try formatting it to get rid of everything, use the Palm or a PC, check that the card is showing the correct amount of space and then copy the map again.
It could be that the TE can't read the 512 card, there have been problems with SanDisk cards in the past.
With MapSonic you can save the map to your PC hard drive and then use a card reader to copy the map to the SD card. Much quicker than synching. Copy a small map first to create the correct directory on the card before copying using the card reader.
You can't cross different maps. You have to load each map in turn. Before I had a big enough card, I split the UK into North and South, centre around my home town, to create smaller maps.
MapSonic allows you to detail the level you want. Have a look in the instructions as I can't remember how, never having had to do this. |

Thanks for that,
The map I created was 292mb which fitted on the card, but when I tried to run Mapsonic the error message appeared, I presume the problem is with the palm not the card.
How can you check the free memory on the palm?
Should the mapsonic software show the map on screen despite the size of the file? |

With a bit of trial and error I have hopefully cut waps which will be of use on the road.
The Palm would not read a map of 290mb, but will read Leeds southwards (225mb) and Sheffield northwards (100mb) which means I can always plot a route out. I am also cutting Yorkshire/Lancashire coast to coast just in case..!!
Would really appreciate if anyone knows of a gps receiver to hook up to Tungsten E
Thanks |

If you look at viamichelin site they do the whole kit, gps, car mount, charger and mapsonic v3 for the Te. this is the kirrio gps setuip which is your only option with a Te. Global positioning systems and argos also stock it.
I have it on my wifes palm with a full gb map on sd card and it runs very well on the Te - no perfomance issues at all.
You can also find the kirrio pack on ebay - just make sure it includes the connectors for the Te.
One point to check - if you buy a version with mapsonic 2.5 you can upgrade to v3 for nothing if not you have to pay - but if you ask first they normally give you a 50 euro discount.

Hi.
I also got a 'Cheap' copy of Mapsonic ver 1.32 and have managed to get full UK (290+Mb) on a 512 SD card. I'm running on a T3 with a Navman GPS 500 and on the few trips I've used it on it apprears to work fine!
One Point I would make is that although it is stated 8Mb should be free on Palm I read somewhere that it's best to have 16Mb on Palm for crash free operation. I currently have 44Mb free and use a second card for non-essential apps.
Cheers

Batchpad,
T/E can be connected to a GPS - see this extract from a post of mine in the 'Palm' section ...
===================
But ... a search on ebay (Tungsten E gps) showed up a US trader who auctions a Holux 210 GPS and a professionally made custom cable to connect to the TE in the car (look at the international sellers). It works very well and seems to sell for about $50-70. Postage to UK is $30 and then one has the shock of £9 customs (VAT) and a Parcel Force Clearance fee of £13.50 which is bl**dy extortionate. I paid more than I would have done for the Kiirio cable from Germany, but got tired of looking.
Still - I now have a TE + ViaMichelin Navigator GPS which works very well. - now, where to hide all that cabling?
====================
Regards, |

May I suggest that you DONT hotsync large maps to your palm. It rarely works!
You have two options.....
Buy a card reader / writer from ebuyer (£5!) and tranfer that way (in aboth 5 minutes!
or
Use Card Export 2 to tranfer your files! you can *cough* use the trial facility or *cough* P2P it! THis program gets your palm to act as a USB drive so that you can drag and drop!
either way it should do the trick! |
