When the Emtac Sleeve came out back in 2002, we reviewed this as part of the TravRoute CoPilot review. What we didn't do is create a separate review, and we've been receiving quite a lot of response lately asking for a separate review for the Emtac Sleeve, so for all you who asked for it, here it is.

Thanks for the email telling me where the EMTAC GPSJAQ was available from (If possible could you send it again as I mistakenly deleted it). I have purchased one of these sleeves and it is a very well made piece of kit, also having used an old CF jacket and a Haicom CF GPS jacket for a while now, I am finding it a lot tidier and less fussy for daily use.

My only question is about the internal Lithium Ion battery. There is no mention in any of the companion literature or on the packaging for the jacket of this battery, however, your review and the EMTAC site all make reference to it. Does it actually exist?

Don't worry about the battery. It doesn't power the GPS in anyway. The battery is only there to provide backup support for when the sleeve doesn't have power to store information in a chip of last known data to make it quicker to acquire a satellite fix. You'll find similar backup batteries in Pocket PC's (some are removable), and other devices like calculators or PIM's etc. It's just a little round watch style battery. When you charge the sleeve, this will re-charge the battery also. If it didn't have this backup battery in it, then as soon as you pulled the power plug out then you would find your next satellite fix would take approx 15 mins rather than around 50 secs.

Intersting review, and you seem quite taken with the device.


You mention that if using it mainly in-car (my intention, but I can conceive that occasional use around town MIGHT be nice), a GPS mouse would probably be better. Why is that?
