|
|
Hi All,
I contacted ALK Eu tech support and questioned why the v5.0.1.48 UK update was not yet available from the website.
I didn't get an answer to this specific question but it did prompt them to ask for my address so that they could mail me a CD copy of that version...
If it's as reliable as the US update appears to be, then I'll be happy with that - other than referring to roundabouts as circles (and the mysterious moving GPS warning slider) it's been working well since I installed it.
If they can just give us the much advertised traffic advisor...
I was a TT3 user before moving to CP. I have to say that in my experience, TT3 was far less reliable with my hardware (iPAQ 5455 & Navman Jacket). It was forever hanging up. CP5 doesn;t appear to suffer this particular issue! |

I was less lucky with ALK. I emailed them asking the same question, and after a couple of weeks delay they replied saying:
Version 5.0.1.48 is due to be released in the next few months, however we do
not have an exact date at this present moment.

I suspect that within "the next few months" the new version of TomTom will be readily available and ALK through their indifference to customer concerns will have lost a large proportion of their user-base to their main rivals. _________________ Nokia E65 & TT Nav6 |

V.48 (European) is available NOW, as I have actually got it. This was provided by ALK after I returned my SD card and software to them.
So, their assertion that it will be available in the next few months is not exactly truthful.

What ALK say is true. .48 will be publically available in the next few months. It is being out to some people who are complaining about specific fixes to get wider coverage in testing to see if this resolves specific problems. |

I didn't fancy the idea of several months wait, so downloaded v48 from the USA site. Seems to be working OK, and as I use the wav voice I don't have the problem of circles, ramps etc. Haven't tested it enough yet to know if the original problems have been overcome (eg missing voice instructions at certain roundabouts, exit roads etc even though instructions correctly shown on screen)

I've installed patch 5.0.1.48 from the European website but have not given it any serious testing. Had some trouble getting the TTS to work. Not sure exactly how I got it working but it may have been something to do with uninstalling TTS, installing WAV, uninstalling WAV then reinstalling TTS. All this after the initial 5.0.1.48 installation. _________________ --Ken

It's interesting that the date of the EU/UK v.48 update file is 27 Jan 05...why has it taken 4 months to make it publicly available when ALK have known about users' problems? _________________ Nokia E65 & TT Nav6 |

It appears to be exactly the same patch as I downloaded from the USA site a couple of weeks ago. Just in case it has any European tweeks I installed it over the US 5.0.1.48, but my download manager says it is exactly the same file

I got replacement cDs from ALK last week after emailing customer services. Trouble is v48 doesn't seem any different to the previous rubbish updates. POIs STILL don't work on my Mitac Mio 168 and Yes, I've tried every suggestion made in this forum. I've emailed ALK again but I don't expect to get a reply until I've chased them several times.
Why didn't I go for TomTom. |

This may help others - or it may just be me.
I installed 5.0.1.48 and lost sound as predicted on the ALK web page. I uninstalled/reset/resinstalled TTSUK a couple of times, no sound.
In testing whether I had sound I was playing the sample gps track, I discovered roundabouts were now called "Circles".
After some hunting/testing, on my pocket pc there is a top level directory called "Copilot". In there is a file "language.cfg". This is text readable and contains 2 config lines setting TTSDIR and CurrentLanguage.
I changed "US English" to "UK English" and all my Circles became roundabouts. i.e.
"Current Language"="UK English"
The TTSDIR was pointing to a non-existant path for me ("/pocket speech/tts/..something.."). I changed the path to be
"TTSDir"="/pocket speech\mle01\ukenglish\roger132"
My UK English Text To Speech burst back into life.
Cheers
