I opened up my MIo case and checked the cable connection which was solid - no problem

so obviously it seems that the actual GPS receiver is knackered

GGA 1, GLL 1, GSA 1, GSV 5, VTG 1, MSS 0, ...

here is data with gps left out in the car a bit overcast for quite a while

the 3 readings were taken within 2 minutes of each other
