reinstalling my backup means everything works again but as soon as i let it update the maps it won't find a signal.

assuming you are using a tomtom (check instructions if you aren't), either extract the files directly to the relevant map folder on the device or extract to somewhere on your PC and then copy them ove ...

have you tried operating it from TTHome. I had the same prob once but after operating it in TTHome it was fine.
