So, what IS the difference betwen the deleted Europe DEM file and the Basemap DEM file NR 5.01 that's in every Garmin device?

Checking maps already installed on the device you come to an entry called;

"Basemap", and this is referenced as;

You're right M8TJT. Forgot about the 300Kb limit, although I have sent files over 350Kb in the past without problems. Suppose it depends on your service provider.

Once again, thank you to all helpful members. I have now restored the Europe DEM file on my devices from a backup I did in 2015. The file is "gmapdem.img" and is 310,392Kb in size, dated 15 June 2015, ...
