I don't know what the battery type is - I believe you can do this to Li-Ion batteries without causing problems, but other types will degrade.

I have a TT BT GPS too, and use it for about 4 hours on ...

As an afterthought, is it in that case advisable just to leave the charger plugged in all the time?

You can use it whilst it is being charged.
