The GPS Rider has not had any update facility released yet, you are probably trying to use the Talex update software which is unlikely to work.

One of the bigget reasons may be piracy - there are a lot of copies of the maps and s/w out there. Having your own hardware makes it simpler to control this sort of thing.

Try taking it outside and having a clear view of the sky. I couldn't get a signal in my house at all.

If using bluetooth and not CF best option is CF as CF is faster

You could get one with an external aerial. As I'm not a car driver I don't know how you'd route the cable or where you'd put the aerial though.
