The way I got my 720 to update to v8.010 was to go via HOME and delete the application from the SD card and then disconnect, reconnect and get it to do an update, that worked for me.

In Home under the preferences tab it is possible to turn off Home looking for updates, which in this case would be bad

One thing that might help:
The settings you make are stored in a file called "MapSettings.dat" in the map folder.
