This behavior is "by design".
However, average speed within current zone is displayed above current speed. When you're out of zone speedo displays overall avg. speed. |

For a little while the app will drop off the front screen, on its own, even though all settings haven't changed, and it shows that the app is still doing something as the app tile has a dot on it.
