I had the same pleasant surprise with a 1:50 000 map of Provence. The base Road map covers all of Europe. Managed to set up a POI of a place I'm going to in Turkey from the map.

This is probably no consolation, but just to say it does work on some Satmaps.
I've checked on mine and the routes appear on the Satmap as I named them in the Route Planner.
