Speed cameras are set to return to the streets of Coventry after an eight year absence.
Average speed cameras will be installed later this year on London Road and Ansty Road - two of the city's busiest roads.
Over approximately three years there have been 22 accidents, including three fatalities and six serious injuries on London Road and 32 accidents on Ansty Road with two fatalities and five serious injuries.
A Coventry City Council spokesperson commented: "Clear signs would be put up to tell drivers they are entering an average speed control zone."
They added: "Income from motorists paying for speed awareness courses would be used to cover police costs and re-invested in maintaining and potentially extending the scheme."
Many drivers are still unsure as to how average speed cameras work. For those that don't know, they work by using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) which records the vehicle's number plate at each camera position. Using the distance between positions, the average speed can be calculated by the time taken to travel between two cameras.

Aha, so it is a money making scheme so that they can invest in making more money. I wonder how many of those KSI were where excessive speed played a major contributory factor. |

They've been there a couple of weeks, just waiting for activation as they have had the not in use signs up since about the 2nd week of Feb. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |
