I have been running a very stable setup now for some time as shown below. Today when I tried to open TTN3, all that happened was a Windows style message " TomTom Navigator failed to create empty document. ok"

I have tried soft and hard resets and also restoring from good full backups via Sprite. Same error message. It did manage on one or two attempts to load and seemed to operate correctly, but when shut down failed to launch again.

I generally reset before starting TTN3 and make sure that no other applications are running and there is sufficient program RAM.

The iPAQ seems to be running OK and other applications run OK. Self tests are OK.

I have not yet attempted a reinstall of TTN3 plus updates.

Anybody have any ideas please?

Thanks

What happens if you remove the card holding the maps then launch TomTom, do you get the 'please install maps' error or the same error as before?

I dont know if this helps, but most of my exception errors are down to the storage card, and POI faults. There is a very useful tool http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=63 called Storage tools that may help if you scam the card and then defrag it.

Thanks Darren and Parky for your swift replies. I believe you have both helped to point me in the right direction.

Darren, I had tried this earlier to try and 'nudge it' a bit. It reported the usual 'please install maps error' , indicating that my problem was further down the line.

Parky. I actually have Storage Tools (Soft Winter) installed, which as you say is a very useful tool. I have recently purchased a new 512MB CF card and have loaded all Italy, several segments of France and South East England, in preparation for a holiday in a few weeks time. I also have UK Postcodes loaded. Before loading, I made sure to scan for errors and defragment. I scanned after installing but was unable to defragment as the system requires 15% free space to operate. This has been the case to date, so I wasn't able to try this earlier.

Your mention of POI faults prompted me to try my original CF 256MB card which has all GB, Major European Roads and UK Postcode. It worked, therefore the fault was on the new card. I deleted a recently updated POI and the fault went away :D

I have now removed some map sections to create space to user the defragmenter and will reinstall smaller segments to leave at least 15% free.

Many thanks for all your help Thumbs Up

regards
