TomTom3 and Navman 3300 compat question

I've been drawn into GPS but i'm ideally after a Terrain/Coats/Port
maps and road/street maps* *With voice directions.

I keep going back to look at the TomTom system

but i need a terrain/costal map as well, like on the Navman3300 I just
can't seem to get anyone from the 2 companies to tell me if TomTom
will work with the Navman3300 sleeve

Yes it will. You'll need the Navman drivers, available from this site in the downloads section and er........that's it!

following on though, I have TomTom 3 already now is there any terrain coastal/port maps software I could get and use just my iPAQ and a GPS receiver without needing a Navman sleeve

I'm thinking of getting a cable connected GPS unit with Sirf Star II chipset instead of the Navman so I assume there are other programs I can get for my purposes

You can get topographical (terrain) mapping software.

If you are going to use the 'terrain' maps for off road vehicle use then you can use the wired GPS connected to the iPAQ and install software such as Fugawi, Anquet or Memory Map which all use Ordnance Survey mapping.

However, if you are planning to use the maps on foot (away from the vehicle) then a wired GPS is of little use as there will be no power supply to it.

For a better answer you need to say what use you will be putting the 'terrain' maps to.

yes that was one of my concerns about wired receivers, I did look at the
The Rikaline GPS-6010 Smart GPS Receiver which on the web site says

Internal backup power: 3V Rechargeable Lithium cell battery, up to 1000 hours (41.7 days) discharge

so I'm even more confused now does this mean it can run without a power suply or not

In my opinion no it can't. It is a wired receiver which needs a 12v supply.
It has an internal back-up battery which I presume is to reduce fix times.

You haven't said which iPAQ you have, but to use GPS away from a vehicle you will need to consider either a CF GPS, SDIO GPS or Bluetooth GPS.

In my opinion you would be better looking at Bluetooth if your iPAQ has it :
a) it will have its own power in the form of an internal battery which can be recharged. The CF and SDIO receivers (which plug into the expansion slots at the top of the iPAQ) will draw power from the iPAQ thus reducing battery life. b) it is easier to position for optimum satellite reception anywhere in the vehicle as there are no cables.

If you do not have Bluetooth then the Terrain 3300 may be your only solution as you will need the expansion slot to store the maps.

Many thanks, as of yet I don't have nay of the kit I was looking at all angles before I decided what to go for. I think a Bt device is the way to go then as this will cover all my angles.

I want to be able to use the thing on my Trike and in my car, but also use it for walking around Wales where I live and the Coastal areas on my mates boat, just so we know where to drop anchor in the harbours, so depth charts and channels would be needed for that.

Nothing out to sea as it has a bearing only GPS system fitted.
Position is more important than features so a map will do for that

As you have no kit yet (I presumed you had either an iPAQ H3600, H3700, H3800, H3900 or H5400 series as only these will work with the GPS 3300) then the world is your oyster.

As a starting point, take a look at the iPAQ 2210 and a Bluetooth GPS receiver such as the Fortuna clip-on or Navman 4100.
For software TomTom 3 is a good choice for street routing and Perhaps Anquet or Memory Map for the terrain maps.

As for depth charts and channels, I'm not sure.

decided to look for BT308 Bluetooth GPS used an iPAQ 3870

A 3970 would be a better bet if you can find one at the right price.

price is limited and there seems to be some good value 3870 for sale on Ebay at the moment, if only I could catch one , dam that snipping
