|
|
This device lists at least five different ways of entering map coordinates. None of which seem to correspond to the format used by the UK Ordinance Survey maps. For instance a map reference TM 479708 would put me on the beach at Dunwich in Suffolk.
Is there anyway of entering the above into one of the offerings given by Garmin? Ringing their Tech Dept has been a complete waste of time. |

If you have the choice of British National Grid then note that a ten figure grid ref is catered for. Yours is a 6 figure so you need to put trailing zeros in, so in your case it would be TM 47900 70800
That gets me to the beach at Dunwich also, and it's correct. Where do you think it should be? |

Thanks for the info. Yes Dunwich is the correct location.
The formats on offer are
h ddd.dddd followed by a Degree symbol
h ddd' mm.mmm' A degree symbol is displayed after 3d's
h ddd' mm' SS.S" ""

Ok, then I misunderstood your original post. Later nuvis (my 2508 for example) allow you to select BNG. If yours doesn't then you're out of luck |

It is difficult to tell which is newer or older by the designation given to the many similar devices produced by this company.
I have only had my unit purchased from new from Halfords for less than 6 months!
It would seem that I am between a rock and a hard place in respect of this unit. I am very satisfied with it except for this problem.
Do you have contact information for Garmin Tech Dept? |

My 1490 was the same. I believe the additional coord option was only introduced with the 2013 range. At the end of the day a nuvi is aimed at vehicle navigation on roads so I expect this was something that was never high on the list of things that needed to be included.
You could try calling Garmin Customer Support, but I can't see it helping change the way your 54 works. Contact details are here:

Thank you for your reply....
I tried talking to Customer support but the lass had NO idea about mapping! Let alone type of mapping.
I am hoping that there will be a downloadable update that can be applied. Reason for this map?
I go walking and Birding. The start location is given as per Ordnance Survey Landranger series. Typically the Car park was down a long lane in the middle of a very large wood! Not on a road map.
Thanks for your reply |

I have the same issue as a walker and a member of a Search and Rescue team. One reason why I bought a 2508 ... it does British National grid. |

You can use http://www.fieldenmaps.info/cconv/cconv_gb.html to convert between OSGB and lat/lon grid references.
(Use the box on the left, in the section headed Great Britain National Grid, and also the WGS84 boxes immediately above for the lat/lon references).

Some of the work I do necessitates conversion of Grid Reference (or Northing/Easting) to Lat/Long (for transfer to a GPS). I wrote a noddy routine to test the algorithms. If you'd like a copy of the executable, please let me know. E-Mail: gerbilsoft (at) btinternet (dot) com _________________ ... Joe

They're not lazy, they've done it and other stuff as well, but you bought one of the cheapest Garmins which doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the most expensive. I have one somewhere in the middle that does do BNG as well as having digital traffic.
