Best car powered GPS Receiver?

We have a Dell laptop, Microsoft Autoroute 2004, Mappoint 2004 and Streets and Trips 2004

We're going to the States soon and taking the laptop with us. I was going to buy an Earthmate over there, but I'm wondering what people recommend that's available here that will work with the software I have (I presume most will).

I also have a Garmin Etrex Legend, maybe I should just use that? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the Legend with the latop and software I have?

As far as I understand those are serial receivers. So you will need a serial cable , and your laptop needs to have a serial port. Not sure how old your laptop is, but some of the newer ones don't have serial connectors any more.

Apart from that your setup looks to be ok. You will have a device that can be used standalone (off car) as well as with the laptop in car.
