gps for use in africa

can anyone help me - I am new to this market and am trying to find the best suited gps for use in africa. Basically I am going to be driving around game parks in countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique and I would like to buy a gps to help me out - can anyone make any recommendations as all of the gps i look at seem to all be talking about european things.... Question

I don't think there are many ready made maps for those areas, except that Garmin make a map for South Africa, but it and the device you'd need to use it don't come cheap. If you want automatic routing, I think you'll be struggling to find anything to guide you round gameparks. It might be an idea to use paper maps with a GPS which will tell you your Lat/Long. You would be able to pick up a Garmin 2 quite cheaply on eBay, which has no maps at all but will plot your route on a 'breadcrumb' trail so that you can retrace your steps if you get lost. You could also get their Waypoint Manager software with which you could create your own waypoints and download them to the GPS via a PC.

You can find a bunch of commercial software and free maps for all of these countries in the World GPS Map Database:
