I am familiar with the files used for TT POIs and know that I need a bmp and ov2 files (with the same name to the left of the dot) for POI.

I am also aware that quite often there are two bmp files such as

campsites.ov2
campsites.bmp (small icon)
campsites_X2.bmp (large icon)

If I wish to use the large icons must I remove campsites.bmp (and save files on laptop in case of later need) and then rename campsites_X2.bmp to campsites.bmp or is there an easier solution for the many POIs I have like this?

Alternatively do you know if I can use a batch method to rename *_X2.bmp to *.bmp? Sometimes, but not very often, I long to go back to the days of DOS when life was so much simpler (for me anyway).

I am using Windows 7.

With the X2 icons you need both so load all 3 files on the unit.

The campsites.bmp is used on the map itslef.

The campsites_X2.bmp is used at the top left hand corner of the unit.

Firstly, you always need the normal sized .bmp.

That icon is used on screen for the "Browse map" display and the normal navigation screen, and is scaled up in size to make the warning flashed up in the top left hand corner of the screen if you have the "warn when near..." function set up.

The "x2" version is optional. It is only used to improve the look of the top-left corner display. It doesn't make it any bigger (unfortunately), but it means the system doesn't have to double the size of the little icon, which can make it look jagged.

To clarify, in each case load all 3 files

i.e.

campsites.ov2
campsites.bmp
campsites_X2.bmp
somethingelse.ov2
somethingelse.bmp
somethingelse_X2.bmp
etc.ov2
etc.bmp
etc_X2.bmp

.....

Thanks to you both.

As usual I have a sensible and helpful answer in no time at all.

Please keep up the good work.

One result of renaming/copying the ...X2.bmp files to ...bmp is that the icon is twice the size on the main nav screen. This means the Pocket GPS icons always stand over the built-in speed cameras. Not sure of that's really good or bad, just an observation.

BTW, if you do want a bulk rename program, then Bulk Rename Utility - http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk - is pretty good.

With navcore 8.3 and above, the 'small' bmp file can be upto 32x32 and will display on the map and option lists etc. I gave it a go for a while but the pointer added by TomTom assumes the icon is 22x22 (20x20 with a 2px border) and so obliterates a lot of the icon. Sad

I gave up on it and stuck to 24x24 which coincidently makes the top ends of the pointer be almost at the same place as the circle on the icons.
