Tapping into Car GPS Antenna on Roof

Hi all,

I am hoping to buy a Pocket-PC GPS system for my car. I was planning on buying an iPaq 4150 Pocket PC, and a bluetooth GPS unit. I was initially thinking of mounting the bluetooth receiver on my rear parcel shelf, as I have a cigarette lighter socket in the boot.

However, my car (BMW) came with a "shark fin" on the roof, which contains a mobile phone antenna, and the antenna for sat nav if that is installed. I haven't got sat nav installed as standard, but I am hoping that the "shark fin" is a standard unit that contains the sat nav antenna anyway.

My question is, if I can confirm that a GPS antenna is on the roof, and I can find where the wires go, will it be technically possible to tap into the wires to connect a GPS unit??? Are there different standards used for external antennas, or is it simply the "plug" that differs????

Possible or silly idea ????

Both the phone and the GPS antennas will use coaxial cable. Search for these. The GPS antenna may have a MMCX connector - that's predominant with Pocket PC compatible GPS receivers.

So - not a silly idea at all..
