Hi, many of you will know me from the TomTom and SpeedCam sections, but I'm a bit of a stranger to the Garmin den!
A friend has asked me to look at his Nuvi250 which was shutting down as soon as he switched it on.
Just connecting it to my PC and Windows loading the drivers for it, seems to have shocked it back to life, but I thought I would register it on the Garmin website and look for any updates.
I seem to have registered OK (no email confirmation though), but my problem is I can't seem to log in to register the device.
If I go to the product registration page
https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/marketing/register.htm
and select "Automotive, Fitness etc devices" I get to this page:
But if I enter my new details and click on "Sign in", I just get bounced to another login screen:
And if I click on "Sign in" on that page I get this error screen:
Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong, or is their site down?
Also, while I'm here... Can I charge the Nuvi250's battery with a USB cable to a PC? (otherwise I'm going to have to sit in the car with it, as I've only got the car charger!) I haven't found any mention of that in the documentation I found on-line, and there doesn't seem to be any way to USE it while it's connected. |

My nuvi 255 charges from the computer via a mini USB cable perfectly OK (but it takes several hours for a full charge).
While connected, it is in Data Transfer mode ie you can browse its memory etc, but cannot use the device.
Software updates are via the Garmin Webupdater software here.
Suspect no need to register, merely to acquire software updates.

According to Garmin the USB will charge the battery but it'll take ~9 hours compared to 2-3 hours with a mains charger.
With the 760 and 765 you can use the device whilst plugged into a PC. Once connected it'll go to Device mode. I'm sure that using the USB Safely Remove Hardware thingy will reboot the device into operating mode.
I can't test now - got too many things going on. |

Perfect! Just what I needed to know. Software updater downloaded and installed.
Now just burning a backup DVD before I go any further!
Thanks dales and paul |

Also from GPS Passion
Quote: | Try plugging in usb cord and let the unit enter mass-storage mode. Unplug connector and wait for it to start rebooting and then plug the connector back in. Second time, it boots as normal, and charges from USB as well. |
Don't think i tried that... I'm sure i just did what i said above, but been so long since used a Garmin now.... |
